1. Your location
Charleston, SC

2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
Comcast Cable

3. Upload and download speeds
Standard HSI 6MB down/387kB up

4. Modem make and model
Terayon TJ715, a Comcast special!

5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2
Motorola VT2442

6. Setup of Network
Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC

7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc

High pings when my phone adapter is being used -- sometimes. When I take it out of the picture, my pings drop back to normal. However, even when the pings are absurd the sound quality does not suffer! In fact, the sound quality is the best I've had in the 8 months I've used Vonage.

Normally, my download speed is around 5800+ kb/s. With the adapter (the last few days) it drops to 2200 kb/s or below, according to dslreports.com's speed test. Interestingly enough, my upload speeds are not affected...still hovering around 360-380kb/s.

But the high pings are killing any attempts at online gaming...

I've power cycled my brains out, swapped cables and so on.

Anything I should try before I spend a few hours with tech support? Also, does the router really automatically download firmware updates like the Vonage tech support page says?

Please run the forum Voip test (top right of your screen) with and without the VT2442 in the setup and report the detailed results here.

Yes, you should get firmware updates automatically.

The only changes in the adapter's console was to forward a port for my bittorrent software to work properly...but that was a few months ago, and I haven't had any problems until recently.

That slowdown is drastic, as you said. Were you running bittorent during this testing?

Absolutely not. Nothing using bandwidth (other than FIrefox) was running during these tests.

I think the VT2442 is having issues. Since you've gone the power cycling route, I'm afraid you're in for a session with tech support, assuming it's a Vonage supplied unit and you can't just run out and replace it.

Assuming that gaming and bittorent remain in your future, you might want to consider a really good router to go in front of the Vonage unit, with the Vonage unit used as a phone adapter only.

This is such a strange problem. I checked it again this morning -- early , after my PC had been off all night -- and got normal results with the adapter:

Quote:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 6343856 bps
Upload speed: 370792 bps
Quality of service: 99 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 58 ms
Average download pause: 5 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 35 ms
Average round trip time to server: 36 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 4.2 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.9 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.1 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 4
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

Yet when I get home tonight, the pings will be through the roof and download speed cut in half. Take the adapter out of the setup, and the pings/speed will be normal, so it isn't Comcast.

I'll monitor it and keep the thread updated, so hopefully someone in the future will have this thread as a reference.

I've monitored it over the weekend...and the strange behavior continues.

My pings increase while my download speed is halved as the day progresses. They start in the normal range early in the morning (40-50 ping to www.comcast.com/www.google.com and 6.34 MB/s down) and increase to 200-300 and 1.8-2.0 MB/s by the evening.

I take the router out, and the pings/speeds are great. If it is a bad router, why is it bad only at night? Is it a morning router? Very Happy

Could it be a temperature thing? Do you leave the adapter on overnight? Does the room temperature go up as the day progresses?

I've tried it both ways plugged in all day/night and tested it early in the morning, unplugged the adapter all day, plugged it back in the evening and still get the performance loss.

The adapter is in a well-ventilated area, too.
