Some friends of mine canceling Vonage, but would like/need their number. Bellsouth has not been able to get it for them, telling them to call back in a few weeks.

Is it possible to get it back, and if so does anyone have any suggestions?

Vonage will hold a number from a canceled account for 30 days, after that it is lost for good. To port your number out you MUST have an active account, so you have 30 days to call back in a re-active the account if you really want that number. There is no getting around this, as a phone company will never be able to port a non-active number no matter what since it technically doesn't belong to you anymore.

No, once a number is ported to a company (Vonage in this case) and you cancel your account it now immediately belongs to Vonage. That number will go back into their usable pool of numbers after 30 days and will be assigned to another Vonage customer. The only way to port that number out is to have an active account.
