yes i know it can be done, thats not my question.

Vonage Router - RTP300
Wireless Router - Dlink model # DI 514

On the Vonage rtr all i have plugged in is the WAN, Phone line and power cord. On my Wireless i have the Vonage, and PC connected, oh and WPA (wireless signal encryption if u didnt know) is ON. ive been using this set up for a long time. So a few days ago i hooked my laptop up to my wirelss router via an Ethernet cord.

Next thing i know my phone 1 light turns off on the rtp300. i reset BOTH routers to finally fix it. Then i i get my phone back. So i turn WPA back on the wireless. As soon as i put a password back on my signal, Phone 1 light turns back off. What could be the problem? I dont want to leave my wireless signal unprotected but im looking for jobs and NEED my phone ON at the moment. Do i need to give the RTP300 my wireless Router's password or something like that??

Side question ~ While my laptop is plugged into the Dlink i CANT use 192.168.15.1 to look at and change my RTP300 settings. I can only change it by putting the ethernet cord into the RTP300. but if i do that and then push the "clone mac address" button, arnt I cloning my Laptop info into the RTP300 instead of cloning the Wireless router info into the RTP300?

thanks for any and all assistance.

i was wrong about the WPA being the issue. maybe its simply my laptop being in the Wireless router.

My Vonage was workn great for a while and with my WPA off, it just stopped working a little while ago. My laptop is Downloading using bit torrent but that shouldnt be an issue because when my PC was plugged into the router it would download using torrents at even higher speeds and i could still make and recieve phone calls while DLing. However i'd have to pause a few of the torrents for the line to clear up but i was still connected none the less.

possible router failure? how can i test that theory on both of my routers?

First thing I'd check is for MAC Address Cloning on the RTP300.

I'd be willing to bet a few virtual dollars (which can be spent on virtual beer at any virtual establishment) that MAC Address Cloning is turned on in your RTP300 and that the MAC address matches that of your laptop.

Turn MAC address cloning OFF in the RTP300. Since it is behind your wireless router, there's no need at all in having it turned on. You would ONLY use MAC address clone to fool your ISP into thinking your MAC address had not changed, assuming you have one of the older-style cable ISP's that require you to never change your MAC address.

First you'll need to change the RTP300 so that it has a Static IP. You can do this on the main Setup page. Make sure the Static IP is out of the range of your DHCP addresses. 192.168.0.249 would be safe.

Second, you'll need to enable Remote Administration, which can be found in the Administration section.

After you have setup the Static IP and Remote Administration you'll be able to access the RTP300's settings by going to http://192.168.0.249:8080

I have our network setup this way...

Cable modem --> Wireless Router --> Vonage Adapter & Computers

I enabled the DMZ on my Vonage router's static ip.

Whats hilarious is it never even occurred to me to enable remote administration on it. I've always been just going over to it and plugging my laptop into the back if I needed to change or look at anything. Lol

I'm glad I looked at this post. arcking just made my life simpler! LOL

But I've never played with the MAC cloning.

I did have to use MAC cloning when I was down in Florida visiting my father. His Cable ISP made you call them if you changed computers (hence if you changed MAC addresses). Since I was only there for a week, I just cloned the address of his main computer and it worked great.

However, MAC cloning should ONLY be needed (if that) on equipment that is directly exposed to your ISP. If you clone a MAC address that is on the same subnet (for example, if your PC and Vonage device end up with the same MAC address), you'll have HUGE problems.

A MAC address is a unique identifier within a given network that identifies each device to the router or network controller. If two devices have the same MAC address, the router simply talks to the one who has responded the most recently, so you'll get symptoms like "my computer works great, until I plug in my Vonage device, then I can't get on the Internet with my computer, until I surf the web for a second, then the computer works and the Vonage line dies. So I unplug the Vonage device and the computer works great again".

ok when i did my previous post phone was working fine. The phone was working right before i changed my settings.

i went into my rtp300 and changed it to static. I was unsure of were to put that IP address so i just put it in both spots that said "IP address". I did it one at a time, starting at the one at the top. Saved to see if the phone worked, NOPE. Razz then i went back and changed the other. Phone didnt work after this one either.

This is my STATUS page.

normally i have a subnet and all that other crap filled in when its workn properly. I could only acheive that by doing the mac cloning. Should i tamper with the other settings such as Mask n stuff?

Leave it on dynamic. Once your RTP300 becomes a Vonage adapter only, you will have only very infrequent need to log into it, and you can just plug an Ethernet cable into it those few occasions you need to.
