My connection goes from my cable modem to a Blitzz router, then to my Vonage routerRT31P2. When I eliminate the first router and plug directly into the Vonage router, I lose all connections. What do I need to do to eliminate the Blitzz router?

Thanks,

Bill

Your modem may be locked to the MAC address of your Blitzz router. If this is the case you would need to log into the Blitzz routers configuration page and find out what the MAC address of that device is. Then plug a computer into the Vonage device and log into the RT31P2's configuration page at http://192.168.15.1 (User:admin/Pass:admin). From there go to WAN settings and select either clone MAC or override MAC, enter in the address you found on the Blitzz router. Finally, plug the Vonage device directly into the modem and power cycle the modem and RT31P2 and see if it works. If not post back here with what the lights on the front of your Vonage device are doing.

There is no MAC address listed in the configuration manager for the Blitzz router. It configures automatically.

If this is the actual problem, sometimes just unplugging the modem for a half hour or so will make it forget the MAC it was dealing with and accept a new one.

Also check and make sure that the WAN settings on your RT31P2 are the same as those on the Blitzz; i.e., static addressing or dynamic addressing.

I am pretty sure they are both set at dynamic addressing(how can I check that for sure?) I will try unplugging everything for an hour and then see if the Vonage router works by itself. Thanks.

Bill, the first response was referring to your modem not your Blitzz router.

Often times, the modem will "learn" a MAC address of the machine (i.e. computer or router) that is connected to it. So when you switch the order of which router comes first, the modem will still be looking for the old router. This only happens if you do not first reset the modem.

Motorola for example encourages users to leave the modem off for at least 5 minutes to clear this "learned" MAC address. Then when you power it up and connect it to the new router, everyone is happy.

Hope this helps.

The guy at Vonage told me to clone the MAC address listed as the "physical address" in ipconfig fo my Vonage router. I tried this and then did the cycling where you turn everything off and then on, but this did not work either. I am still stuck using both routers.
What if I use the MAC address of my cable modem, would that work?

Bill, let's go through this step by step.

What is the make and model of your cable modem?

(i.e. Motorola SB4200, etc).

Once we know what make and model you cable modem is, then we can find out the MAC address that it is looking for.

Please let us know.

The cable modem is a D-Link DCM-200.

The router I am trying to eliminate is Blitzz model BWA611.

The Vonage router is Linksys RT31P2.

The DCM-200 and Linksys RT31P2 are not compatible,Vonage actually says it is not compatible with any of their devices. You will need to keep at the very least a switch in between them or they just won't work. Here is another thread giving some ways to bypass this incompatibility. http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic1951.html
