I switched to Vonage about 4 months ago and purchased and installed the Linksys WRTP54G purchased directly from Vonage. After a long first night on the phone with support, and some first week home wiring issues, the system has been basically trouble free until the past few weeks. Twice in the past two weeks the system has "died." No dial tone, flashing blue light on phone, one time I did still have internet on the PC and the second time I did not. In both cases, after I unplugged the router for a while and left it off for several minutes, it worked. Short (minute or two) unplugs did not fix it. I'm thinking perhaps the device is overheating or perhaps just dieing. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Do you use BitTorrent or any other P2P or file sharing applications? The sheer number of connections such applications generate can overwhelm the wRTP54G, which is an excellent Vonage device but a low-end router.

What firmware version are you running? (go to the login screen and the firmware should be in the upper-right corner).

I could be heat. Is the unit fairly hot to the touch? If it is uncomfortable to leave your hand on the unit for any length of time, it may be overheating.

Thanks for the reply. First off, let me add to the problem by one . . . now three times. It was out last night and now out again today when I got home from work. I unplugged for 3 minutes, plugged back in. Dial tone. Then tried again, no dial tone. Repeated this a few times. Then unplugged for 15 minutes, plugged back in - worked.

No, I do not use any P2P filesharing apps.

Not sure about firmware version or, for that matter, which "login screen" you are referring to. Can you elaborate? I have no login during boot other than the WinXP login and my e-mail login. There is no installed group for Vonage or Linksys that I see or remember. There is no linksys router that appears in the device manager.

Heat. Still possible. Room temperature is 77 degrees but the unit is very warm to the touch . . . not blazing hot, mind you, but a bit uncomfortable.

The login screen for the WRTP54G can be accessed by going to http://192.168.15.1 in your web browser.

If you haven't done any configuration to it, it is quite possible that someone else is accessing your wireless network and doing file sharing. If you don't use Wireless, turn it off by logging in (user and password are both ADMIN), going to the "Wireless" tab, and setting "Wireless Network Mode" to "Disabled".

If your firmware is not at 1.00.62, then you don't have the latest. If it is really old (1.00.20 or earlier), then you need to turn off wireless temporarily to get the latest version - the older firmware upgrades needed to free up a lot of memory to load, and turning off wireless usually works.

You may have a defective or failing router, but let's eliminate other issues first. Wink

Thanks for the prompt reply and the helpful info.

Yes, I had been to that site back on day one when setting up the router. My firmware is at 1.00.62 and I do have a password on the router to prevent unauthorized use. Moreover, there is enough distance between my home and the nearest neighbor that unauthorized use is very unlikely with or without the password. That is a good thought though.

I may try putting a small fan to blow across the router to see if that has any impact.

I purchased a small 6" desk fan and have positioned it to blow across the router. It is now cool to the touch. I'll report back to the forum on if this seems to solve the problem.

Well, it has been 6 days since I put a desk fan blowing across the Linksys WRTP54G Vonage router and I have had no service problems at all. I am now nearly convinced that heat was indeed the problem and this little $6 fan fixed it.

Very cool. (pun intended, but bad).

Glad to hear that a simple fix got the router up and running.
