I have a cable modem and have been a Vonage user for over 2 years in the same location in Argentina with the same ISP. Beginning several months ago I started experiencing regular choppy service (sometimes both ways, sometimes alternating one-way).
How can I improve my call quality?
Here are my test numbers:

I was experiencing a similar type of issue with my Vonage service recently. After further investigation, I found out that my ISP was the source of the problem. They sent a tech to my home to correct the issue.

The issue I experienced, was the modem was running at the "edge". In other words, the signal level for the receive was too low and the signal for the transmit was too high. They were amazed that I was even able to maintain a link and get on the Internet.

Is there anyway your ISP can check the levels on your modem? Also, are they able to send someone to your location to fix it? With a poor link, your QOS will suffer, but with a clean link, your QOS will improve, and QOS is one of the keys to making quality Voip calls.

thanks, Stan
What terms do you suggest I use? Modem on the "edge"? Signal levels need adjusting?

Your speed tests numbers are very bad. You're only getting 162952 bps down. Call your ISP, but don't mention anything about Vonage. Just tell them your Internet connection is really, really slow.

What should my speed test numbers look like on the pull down side?

I would simply ask them to check the Transmit and Receive Channel Power on the modem. They should be able to do this remotely.

I was told by Adelphia that my Transmit Power Level should not be higher than 50 and the Receive Channel Power should be in the single digits, for example, my numbers are:

Receive Channel Power: -8.7 db

Transmit Channel Power: 49.3 dBmv

I am able to do this, because I bought, not leased my modem. I downloaded the manual and read on how to get in and view the parameters. Even if your modem is leased, you may be able to do the same, if you download the manual.
