How does a WRT54GL work? Does it just pull in signal from the router? |

the WRT54GL has a WiFi radio built in. Normally, this radio acts as an "access point", meaning computers connect to it to get wireless access to a network.
NORMAL: - Internet -> (WAN PORT) WRT54GL - WRT54GL (LAN ports) -> Wired Clients (incl. Vonage device) - WRT54GL (WiFi Radio) ->Wireless Clients
With the aftermarket firmware, the WRT54GL becomes a wireless client, and the radio takes the place of the WAN port.
Wireless Internet Service -> (WiFi Radio) WRT54GL WRT54GL (LAN Ports) -> Wired Clients (incl. Vonage device)
In this configuration, the WRT54GL cannot serve as an access point, since it has only one radio (the radio can be an access point, or a client, but not both). You would also leave the WAN port with nothing in it, since the router is accessing the Internet through the WiFi radio. But, it takes your one Wireless account and can share it among the four Wired Ethernet ports.
If your apartment building allows more than one client to connect directly to its Wireless connection, and you want your current machine to remain wireless, then the WRT54GL could just be a server for your Vonage connection (and any other wired computers you may want to use later on). |
