This is kind of a just in case question. Let's say my current phone adapter goes out. I intend to buy a spare unit to have on hand so I can do a quick swap should the current phone adapter break down, get hit by lightening, etc.

Can I swap out the phone adapter on-line using the Vonage website? If so, where is the change made? If not, then I assume that you have to call to make a change.

as far as i knw u cant do it on ur end but what tech support reps do is they register ur 2nd router on their end(u cn do that also) but u have to call back in case the 1st router is screwed up and have tech support assigned ur number on the 2nd router

bt there are some instances (rare) that the same line is assigned to both active devices - but no one line can be assigned to both devices at the same time -

This works, but only the first time, i.e. if it truly is a NEW device. I have two adapters, set up in the two places from which I work, so that I don't have to cart my adapter with me and plug-in when I'm traveling back and forth.

The problem is, Vonage doesn't make it easy for me to switch my line to the other adapter. I have to call in. Apperently, once you have registered an adapters MAC address with their system you can no longer use the online tool to switch. Probably a security measure to stop theft and what not, but a PITA for me. I have to call in every week.

Glorius Day! Just found a solution to my problem, and possibly many others. Vonage now lets you move your line between to adapters already activated on your account.

Log-in to your account
Go to 'Add-ons' in the top navigation bar
Click on the 'Move a number' feature
Do it
Done

Very, very happy.

yep, saw that new feature a week or so ago. Very awesome, and saves previously entered devices too so you don't have to reenter each time.

I like finding new gizmos like that in their interface every now and then. It's like christmas each time I do Smile

To prevent a lightning strike (multiple surges), you will need to have a good surge protector. Buy an extra surge protector if you run out of 6 outlets (note that there are surge protector with 11 outlets).

Just tried the "Move a number" feature at the website to move my number between a V-phone and Linksys PAP2. It does work. I had trouble moving back to the PAP2, but the problem was solved by connecting the PAP2 directly to the cable modem, bypassing my Dlink router. It took 90 minutes on the phone with Vonage CS to figure this out.

So say I went out and bought a new adapter. How would the online tool know that I had another device to move it to? At the current time, I can move my line to Port 2 from Port 1 on my Rt31P2. If i bought a PAP2 or the wireless router, how would the system know?

From Vonage home page:

1. Click on Retail Activation
2. Choose: Current Customer Login: Add a Vonage retail device to my account.
3. Login
4. Choose: purchased a Vonage phone adapter that I want to add to my account
5. Choose: Move existing line(s) to a new device
6. Enter MAC of new device

You do the above steps once.
