First a little background. I got Vonage last weekend. Works great and I am really impressed. My daughter, a recent college graduate, is in an entry level job that does not pay much so she watches her pennies pretty closely. She is paying Cincinnati Bell about $23 a month for really basic phone service. You can call in and out locally, that's about it.

Several months ago she got AOL Broadband installed because it was a great deal at $27 or $28 a month. She does not have to log into AOL to get a broadband connection. It's basically regular Road Runner. Her upload is 368Kbps and download is 4 Mbps.

I told her that getting Vonage she could switch her number and get all the features like caller ID, etc. She said great. So last night I bought a Linksys WRTP54G Router/Vonage combo unit and hooked it up. It works fine so far, well at least after a reboot of the unit (had to do the same when I hooked my unit up).

However, now she claims that the Internet speed has gone into the crapper. Now I have not been over there to measure it, but she listens to XM radio on AOL quite a bit and she says the audio is going in and out all the time like the Internet can't keep the connection. This is when she is not on the phone.

I've gone through the manual for the router as that is the only thing I can think of where a problem could occur. I've configured home routers before so this is not new to me. I have no idea what could be causing the issue with her XM stream.

So anyone have any ideas?

p.s. - I wish I could post the results of the Voip test, but I cannot at this time.

I would suggest running a line speed test with and without the WRTP54G. (speakeasy.net and testmy.net along with the speed test on this site). I use the WRTP54G and my line speed is in no way affected by this device. Be sure to check the firmware version for the WRTP54G...the latest is 1.00.62

Vonage doesn't work with AOL Broadband....its in the terms of service....AOL Broadband simulates a connection like road runner when its not really the same...thats why the connection is so bad it will work but its going to be like that if you continue to use it

That's what the terms of service say. However, if you are search on the help files at Vonage it says - it WILL work if you do not have to log into AOL first in order to get a connection. My daughter does not. In fact, the Internet connection was useable without the AOL software being installed on her computer. In those cases, Vonage states, their service will work on AOL broadband.

There is no "simulation" and I really don't know what you mean by that. Vonage is working on this connection right now.

The issue is that her download speed has dropped since the Linksys Vonage adapter was installed. Even when not using Vonage. That's the issue I am trying to solve.

I am telling you its not going to work thats why the terms of service says it....it wont work...simulate means that u dont have to sign on to aol everytime but the broadband does an internal system dialup. so its not he same...your just going to continue to have issues

Dude, just read the article:

http://vonage.com/help.php?article=863

Vonage is working great. Excellent. No problem. The issue is non-Vonage, but occured since the Vonage capable router is attached. I verified this entire thing with Vonage before signing up. If you do not have to log-in to AOL with the AOL software, then you can use Vonage.

Are there any other routers in your setup? My guess it that you may need another router (hard wired or wireless) to handle both Vonage and your computers. The Vonage all in one routers with phone and LAN ports is most likely give more bandwidth to the phone which explains your good connection. Another router infront of the phone adapter can be setup to give priority and QOS which should alleviate your internet speeds issues
