On one network their are no problems with the SB51xx and on another it might. Also, an RCA modem might be great on one network and not another. Just be aware that because one person has had a good experience it does not mean that you will and vice-versa.


My main point of contention with you is that you stated the SB5120 was a "buggy" modem. I totally disagree with you on that and you confirm this by stating it worked without issue for several months when you used it with Cox. I use the SB5120 with Comcast and Vonage and no issues.

You stated the unit was not damaged physically or electrically, then maybe the issue was firmware related when switching from Cox to Comcast...the old firmware from Cox may not have been totally flushed from the unit before Comcast installed their firmware...thus issues. You said you tried an older SB3100 and it worked without issue, did you try another SB5120 before the Linksys? What matters the most is that you no longer have any issues regardless of the type of modem you're using.

On the subject of a quality connection:

I always use speedguide.net to setup individual parameters for my Internet cable connection. I ping test and then adjust my RWIN and TCP Receive Window, together with the rest of the pertinent settings. So far I've had nothing but good results with cable modes, either DOCSIS 1 or 2.

I would suggest for anyone who is thinking about purchasing a new modem, that they research any possible concerns with that modem on their ISP's service. If they do not use a UDP service then they will probably not see the problem described using the SB51xx's. Also it is dependent on the service provider.
