Thanks for the informative relpies, everyone.

Based on the feedback here, I think I'll hold off on getting a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, and if/when I do get one, it'll be the SB5120.

Good luck with your new modem. I haven't had good luck with Motorola products, but I have heard many people had good luck with the modems.

I would not suggest getting a Motorola SB5120 or any SB51xx series, there seem to be several bugs with this particular modem that may need to be cleared up. I recently sold my SB5120 and got a Linksys modem, works much better than a SB5120. No dropped calls, no long lag times, lost packets, etc.

Dang,

Now your making me feel bad. I haven't had a problem with mine although I never had a problem with the old DOCSIS 1 modem which also was a Motorola until that lightning strike. Now that I know that the SB51xx modems are no good it will probably crap out just to prove your right. Being able to purchase them for 1/2price at my local cable company makes it hard to shop elsewhere for other brands.

I don't know where you're getting your information, but the Motorola SB5120 receives very high reviews. I've installed two Motorola SB5120's, one with Vonage and the other without Vonage and their both rock-solid. I've never experienced one dropped call with this modem, and I frequently run ping tests of 10,000 bytes for 1000 pings to my Comcast server with very minimal packet loss if any.

"OldSnipe", if you haven't had any problems with your SB5120, then more than likely your modem will perform more than satisfactorily until the next DOCSIS upgrade.

Or perhaps the next Lightning Strike?? I seem to generally have pretty good luck with most of the equipment I own I believe that's partly due to the fact that when something works I resist the urge to take it apart to discover why.

Thanks,

I can appreciate your positions regarding the SB5120, I was just as much a proponent of the model myself. It is a great unit on the right network, I had Cox before and it worked like a champ for months, I moved and had to use Comcast, then it started crapping out on their network, found that they have an incompatibility problem. "Sometimes it isn't the hardware, but changing the hardware fixes the problem."

I'm using Cox Communications, so I'm guessing I shouldn't have the compatibility problems like you had. The SB5120 is also listed on Cox's page of compatible modems.

It seems like networking equipment must be judged on a model by model basis, since performance and reliabilty vary so much between models from the same company. It's pretty lame that the veteran networking companies still can't get basic hardware consistently right.

Your comment above is very mis-leading as to what you're stating now. If you used the SB5120 for several months with Cox with no issues, then that totally discounts your bug theory. At some point in time when you made the switch to Comcast the unit may have been damaged, i.e. maybe it was dropped, I don't know; or more than likely your unit experienced an electrical surge that caused the issues you were having...NOT a compatibility problem with Comcast and the Motorola SB5120.

You know, I am simply putting the information out there, if you choose not to accept it I cannot help you. The unit was not damaged in any way, it was shipped in the same packaging it came in. There is a difference in my modem now, the firmware was changed by Comcast. The unit can be buggy, again "Sometimes the problem is not the hardware, but replacing the hardware fixes the problem!" I replaced my SB5120 with an old SB3100 and no problems. The SB3100 had been sitting in my trunk under my 50lb tool bag for two years before I used it again, not discounting the heat in the trunk either. I suggest buyer be ware on these units, do your research on the network you are using and what problems people might have had with certain modems. On one network their are no problems with the SB51xx and on another it might. Also, an RCA modem might be great on one network and not another. Just be aware that because one person has had a good experience it does not mean that you will and vice-versa.
