PostPosted: Thu Aug 10, 2006 10:47 pm    Post subject: Motorola not getting network address? Reply with quote Back to top

Linksys cable modem BEFCMU10>Linksys router WRT54G>Motorola VT1005V. The Motorola does not get past the green light blinking twice in rapid succession. According to what I have read it is tying to acquire it's network address. I have had this working in the past but because of various problems I have had to replace the cable modem and the router in the past few days. The cable and router work fine now and I have internet access. The Motorola does not work when plugged directly into the modem either. The ethernet light on the router panel does not light when the Motorola is hooked to it. The rear panel WAN light does not light on the Motorola when connected to the router. I can connect the Motorola to the computer. The status page shows WAN IP address as dynamic, no IP address, mask or gateway address. DNS server is enabled. Obtain IP address dynamically is checked on the Basic configuration page. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated

(if u insist on connecting it to another router..)
Forgive my ignorance but I thought I needed the router for the PC to connect via airport card. If I do not use the router how would the PC(mac) get online? If I need to get a different modem or router please advise. If I need to replace the Vonage device what would you recommend?
- tried other ethernet port on your 3rd party router?
Yes.
- is this the first time u tried installing von device? cud it be ISP issue? ISP blocking VOIPs?
Vonage was working. Then I came home from vacation and the cable modem was not working so I replaced it.
I have tried connecting the Vonage device directly to the cable modem. I still get the green light blinking twice in rapid succession but it won't go any further. The ethernet light on the modem does not light and the WAN light on the Vonage device does not light when connected to the cable modem.
This is really frustrating. Mainly because I don't know what I am doing. So your help/advice is really appreciated.

I'm not sure if someone pm'd you or not but your 2nd post was definitely more difficult to read.

Regardless, here is what I saw when I went to the help section of the vonage.com website.

http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=885&category=39&nav=5

If you go to the link above, there is a graphic of the back of your unit and it is designed to be able to connect 1 computer to it. There is a WAN port and a PC port side by side correct? If this is so, then I would first remove the router, WRT54G, and use only your Motorola VT1005. Then the connection will be as follows:

Cable Modem -> connected to the WAN port of the VT1005; then from the PC port of the VT1005 to your computer.

I would first turn everything off for at least 5 mins and disconnect all the ethernet cables.

Then power up the cable modem and wait until all its lights are steady (i.e. send, receive, online lights). Once everything is steady, then I would connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port of your VT1005 and then turn it on.

You goal is to see if it will progress through its steps to acquire an address etc.

For now, let's wait to see if it will progress from 1-4 blinks and then go solid.

Let's leave your pc out of it for now. Just connect only your modem and your vt1005.

let us know if this helps. It says that you need to wait at least 5 minutes for your vt1005 to register everything. hope this helps.

Thank you for your help.I did what you suggested. Unhooked all cables, waited at least 5 minutes and connected cable modem>VT1005. I gave it 30 minutes but the VT1005 did not progress past the green light blinking twice. The ethernet light on the front panel of the modem did not light up and neither did the WAN light on the rear panel of the VT1005.

how familiar are you with mac addresses? I say this because it seems like your modem is looking for your wrt54g's mac address (I say this b/c you say that you have internet connection when your wrt54g is connected to the modem).

If you can have the vt1005 clone the mac address of your wrt54g, your modem should be able to communicate with your vt1005 and hopefully get a solid connection.

One way to test to see if your vt1005 is communicating at all with your modem is to connect your computer to the vt1005 and see if it can get on the net. By your comment that the internet light was not even on, I suspect that you won't be able to get on the internet via the vt1005.

Please confirm this.

If you cannot get on the internet via the vt1005, then you will need to get a hold of the mac address of your wrt54g and clone it in the vt1005. we can talk about that once we confirm that the vt1005 is not getting to the internet

Yes.I tried that last night.(Thanks to sinceMay2004 for the suggestion) Still could not get the Motorola to work. I ended up returning the router and getting a WRTP54G. Hooked it up, had Vonage customer service add the new adapter to the existing number and it works great. Best Buy had it for $109 with a $100 mail in rebate and they gave me a $25 gift card also. So it works.

But let me ask another question if you don't mind. My cable co. laid a new line from the street to my house but still has not buried it. Can this line be hit by lightening? I was told no. But if it can then it would explain all my problems with the modem, router, etc.

Thank You for all of your suggestions and help.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to get another router and get it to work. It could very well be an issue with lightning. You are not the first to report a fried router. These guys are especially sensitive to any additional voltage. I personally unplug everything when there is a thunderstorm nearby just in case. Glad to hear that it was your vt1005 and therefore you were able to isolate the issue.

So even though I had unplugged everything from the electrical outlets they could still have been damaged if they were all connected by ethernet?
