PostPosted: Thu Aug 10, 2006 2:12 pm    Post subject: Frequent Vonage Modem Drop Outs when using bittorrent Reply with quote Back to top

My Vonage setup:

Comcast Cable Modem --> Motorola VT1005 (vonage phone adapter) --> PC

Everything works, except I have frequent "drop-outs" when I use bittorrent. In fact, if I start Azureus (my bittorrent client) in the morning, it's pretty much a guarantee that my internet connection will have been dropped when I return from work at the end of the day, which means I have to unplug/"restart" my Motorola VT1005 to restore my internet and phone connection.

Hey, I love cheap phone service, but restarting the phone adapter several times a day is kindofa pain. Plus, I can't torrent anything unless I babysit my PC to make sure the Motorola VT1005 doesn't poop out.

I have a Linksys router I could put upstream from the VT1005, but from what I understand, setup is kindofa pain and QOS suffers.

Any advice on how to remedy this problem would be sincerely appreciated.

The Vonage supplied routers are known to be horrible with P2P, so your problems are to be expected.

What type of Linksys do you have? Setup is generally fairly easy, and QoS can be better.

arcking, thanks for the quick reply.

I have a linksys wireless router, not sure of the model number (I won't be using it for wireless, though... it has four ethernet ports, so I'd like to connect my PC into one and the Vonage adapter into another).

I'm at work right now, but I'll post the model number when I get home in an hour or so. If you could walk me through the set up or point me in the right direction, I'd be much obliged.

Not all the Linksys' are compatible with the 3rd party firmware you would want to install. If its a WRT54G version 1-4, a WRT54GL, a WRTSL54GS, or a WRT54GS version 1-4 it should work fine. If it is not listed there you may have problems getting it set up - not that you can't, but it won't be as easy.

Take a look at NateHoy's VoIP Pages to get an idea of how to set things up. Of interest to you would be these:
- How to set up a WRT54GL in front of a WRTP54G or RTP300
- How to configure QoS on the WRT54GL

You can also try a device like the Hawking broadband booster or the D-Link DI-102. This helped me a lot.

That won't do QoS well for you, if at all. If really want to use P2P you should either get a Voip optimizer like stan2841 suggested (Linksys makes one too), or get another router, any one of the ones I mentioned or a Buffalo WHR-G54S.

Excellent choice.

You may want to read up on some of my articles on the WRT54GL, including instructions on how to get QoS working properly, and configuring your existing Vonage router to work behind it.

http://vonage.nmhoy.net

NOTE: My instructions are for the aftermarket firmware HyperWRT Thibor 14. His latest release is actually version 15c, but I've found version 14 to do a better job at QoS, particularly in relation to P2P and Vonage. The QoS screens on 15c are a little different, but not hard to figure out, if you prefer to have the latest and greatest.

Another excellent choice for aftermarket firmware for the WRT54GL is DD-WRT, available at www.dd-wrt.org (I've never used it, but it comes highly recommended from those I know who have).

My WRT54GL arrived today, I'm going to try to set it up now.

One question... when I go to the thibor site to download firmware, the only "thibor 14" versions are all for different Linksys units:

# Thibor 14 for the WRT54GSv1-3
# Thibor 14 for the WRT54GSv4
# Thibor 14 for the WRT54Gv1-4
# Thibor 14 for the WRTSL54GS

Will these work okay with my unit, or should I go with the Thibor 15 that is "compatible" with the WRT54GL?

Here's another question... I do a lot of online gaming. Is there a preferred way to set up the router for gaming vs. Voip? Is DD-WRT any better at this than Thibor? This article makes it seem pretty impressive:

http://www.lifehacker.com/software/router/hack-attack-turn-your-60-router-into-a-600-router-178132.php

Thanks again for all help you guys have given this clueless newbie.
