I just got Bell south DSL about 2 monts ago and wanted to start Vonage service. From what I've read in this forum I need to take my Vonage adapter back to the store, I have not opened it yet. I did read somewhere I might be able to get another phone line and switch the DSL to that line then port over my main number is this possible? I could use the extra line for my alarm system and 911only. I have never used Vonage before any thoughts or advise woud be appreciated. DSL seems to work better in my area than cable. |

If you have DSL associated with the number that you want to bring over to Vonage then you will not be able to port it until you remove the DSL from that number. The Letter of Authorization will ask you if you have DSL, distinctive ring, and a number of other services on you line. If you do the LOA will automatically fail. Even if it did allow you to bring your number over to Vonage by some fluke(which does happen), then as soon as the transfer process went through you would no longer have a DSL connection either.
Many phone companies offer what is known as Bare, or Dry Loop DSL which is not associated with a number, however you may pay more per month for this since they are not getting your money for that phone line. There was recently legislation passed requiring all DSL companies to offer this in several months time.
One final options would be to get a new phone number from your DSL company, and ask them to attach the DSL to that number. You could put this number on a very cheap basic plan where you would be paying for all incoming/outgoing calls on the line, but if it was only being used for DSL/Alarm this shouldn't be a big issue. |
