PostPosted: Wed Aug 09, 2006 7:19 pm    Post subject: Modem not seeing router Reply with quote Back to top

In Maryland using MetroCast cable.
Linksys Cable modem BEFCMU10 -ethernet->Linksys router BEFW1154-ethernet>MotorolaVT1005V.
I came home from vacation and found that my cable modem would not work.
I had unplugged and disconnected everything before I left. (I had a 'little' problem with lightning a few months ago and they still have not buried the cable they laid after I switched to using cable for the internet).
I replaced the cable modem with the same model.The only way I can access the internet now is to ethernet the modem directly to the computer.
I usually use airport with the wireless router.
The ethernet light on both the modem and the router and the internet light on the router do not light up when connected..
What do I need to do to get my router to work so that I can hook Vonage back up? Thanks

I know you're asking primarily about your router, but I'd start by plugging the VT1005 directly into the modem and seeing if you get internet service to the computer through it and phone service as well. If the problem is strictly with your router, then this should work.

Assuming that it does, plug your computer directly into a LAN port on the router and check out its configuration. Make sure that it's properly set to get its IP assignment (probably dynamically).

Have you checked your cables? You know you have one that's working right since you use it to get internet service to the computer. Use that one to try for service to the router. Have you double checked the cabling to be sure that you're using the right ports everywhere?

I connected the Motorola directly to the cable modem using ethernet. The modem's ethernet light and the Motorola's lights by the plug did not light up. I could not get on the internet. I did plug the router directly to the computer and it shows that the IP address was obtained automatically. I have checked all the cables and they are working and are plugged in to the right ports. I remember reading that when a network is set up and the router's, modems, etc. are working together, that when a router or modem is replaced then either the new one or the remaining have to be configured to see the new one.( I hope I am making sense.) It seems that neither the router nor the Motorola see the new cable modem. Thanks...

Yes, I understand where you're coming from. I've heard that some modems and some internet services don't want to accept a new router/computer/whatever after working with a different one. However, I've never heard of a router with that characteristic, and certainly not a VT1005. Did you by any chance test the new modem by plugging the computer into it first, then go on to trying to set up the router?

If it looks like that's the issue, look at what Mundy5 said in this thread:

Yes. I will try that. That's what I was trying to remember. I'll just 'power down' everything for the night, including myself. ha. And hopefully tomorrow morning everything will 'get along'. I'll post a reply here in the morning on whether or not it worked. Thanks for your help.
