I just added an additional line to my Vonage account. I tried to login to my voicemail with the 1234 code they sent in the email, but it wouldn't work. I went online to look at the account and the number had 8 voicemails from 3 days ago. I was able to listen to them and delete them. I changed the voicemail password and it worked the first time I tried it. But then it wouldn't work anymore. I went back online and changed the password again. This time when I logged in it gave me the welcome new user setup. I also noticed that it was setup to send a voicemail notification to some unknown email. However when I had left a voicemail for myself it actually sent a notification to my main email address which I thought was weird.

Is Vonage reusing numbers as early as 3 days after someone else used them? I was going to go in and change the number immediately but I noticed they charge $9.99. I'm going to keep an eye on it, but if I start getting a bunch of wrong numbers I'm going to call and have them change it for free.

if you go to the change phone number link, Vonage gives the user 3 options.

1. Immediate change of phone number
2. 7 days of messages on the old number saying it has been changed to the new one
3. keep the old number as a virtual number for $4.99/month

So if the person chose option 1, yes, the phone number can and will be given away immediately.

If option 2 is chosen, it will be a 7 day delay.

Thanks for the reply. I am planning on using this new line as my primary home phone number and don't want to start out with constant wrong numbers. I don't want to port my old number either.

I thought Vonage would have done a better job cleaning up the number/account before it was assigned to me. I was able to hear the previous owner's private voicemails. And judging from the content, he/she probably didn't want them to be public.

yes, I can identify with your concerns. It would be shocking to know that my old vm was still linked to the phone number. This should be standard protocol when someone cancels a phone number that the vm associatied with it should also be purged.

I'm sure they are still working on these protocols or maybe someone just dropped the ball. it happens often in groups that experience rapid growth.

After receiving numerous wrong numbers for some business on this new line, I called Vonage to change my number. The guy was nice and changed it without a fee. He was sure to verify which number I wanted changed. I have 2 lines with Vonage and wanted the one I had just added on Monday changed.

I get off the phone with him and go into my account, and guess what? He had changed the number for my original Vonage line! He had verified which number he was going to change with me twice, and he still changed the wrong number!

I call back and get another guy. He verifies the mistake and puts me on hold to try to figure out how to fix it. Well to fix it they need to release the phone number for my original line and then add it back. I was worried that I might lose that number, but he assured me that Vonage keeps the numbers in a pool for 30 days before reusing them. That sounds like BS to me, because I got a number that had only been dormant for 3 days. On top of that this is the number I have been using for work for almost a year, and it is going to take 24-48 hours to get it back!

Keeping my fingers crossed that it will be fixed soon...

Well everything has been fixed as the 2nd tech support guy said he would. One thing that I will add is that when calling Vonage yesterday morning I used the 888-250-1799 number that I have seen posted on this site before. Both times I was connected to someone on the first ring. I didn't have to wait on hold at all. That made me happy after reading some of the horror stories about waiting on hold I have seen here.
