Does anyone know when EMBARQ in Kansas will allow customers to port their numbers? Is there a way around EMBARQ to keep my local number?

Thanks!

I have Embarf as my local phone co in Florida (hate them) and Vonage doesn't have a CLEC agreement in this particular part of Florida... You want to go to this webpage, type your phone # in, and see if Vonage has agreements in your particular part of Kansas... Good luck!

Yeah, no such luck. We found out on the phone with a customer service representative. We were calling to make sure it would all work out to get Vonage, but apparently not.

Do you know of any site that we can request that EMBARQ get a CLEC agreement?

Embarf won't. CLEC= Competitive Local Exchange Carrier. Embarf doesn't want any competition, and the FCC only says that you have to allow competitors to service your area -- it doesn't say that you have to make it easy or affordable.

As far as CLECs in those areas, your best bet is to go with a Voip company which uses Level3 to terminate their calls. Level3 does have POPs (Points of Presence) in many Sprint/Embarf territories. Unfortunately, Vonage only uses Paetec.

Vonage uses more than just paetec. They have at least 7 partner CLEC's. Off the top of my head I can think of Level 3, Xo, Paetec, and Focal.

And as for porting numbers, it's more than just having a presence in that rate center. Three things have to be true for a number port to be forced by law.(PSTN only, wireless has different regulations)

1)The company you are porting away from must be one of the top phone carriers(in amount of lines, top 10% I believe) in the nation to be forced to release your numbers by law. Many smaller phone companies will release numbers anyway, but you will come upon a company that will sit on their numbers every once and a while.

2) 80% of the block of numbers NPA-NXX-0000 to NPA-NXX-9999, must be occupied before a phone company is legally required to port numbers out of that block. Not a big deal in older exchanges, however if you recently got a landline in a new exchange in your town this may affect you.

3) Any finally, the company must have a local presence in that rate center

Local presence is the only thing the Vonage website checks for. So, even if the website tells you that your number is portable, it may not be since Vonage won't know if the company is willing to port/block is full until they actually submit a request for that number to the remote carrier.

Well, if all Vonage needs to do is file a CLEC form with EMBARQ, I found this page on EMBARQ's site:

http://www.embarq.com/wholesale/clec_forms.html

From the post before the previous post, I thought this might be it, but now I'm not sure.
