Started having problems with my audio this week. Now I have choppy audio and when I dial a number and it would work then I try to redial the number I just dialed and I get "the number you have dial is invalid. Please check the number and dial again."

Very, very strange. I have run the Voip speed testing about 5 different times and the results stay consistant.

I suppose bad audio could result in touch tones being transmitted inaccurately. That might explain the "number not in service" business.

What is a Monowall Firewall? Can you take it out and check the service quality with it out of the picture? Have you re-booted your equipment since these troubles started? Is the choppy audio in both directions or just one?

The forum test isn't suggesting any problems. Please run a comparison test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com and post the detailed results here.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.

Here is what I have done so far. Before I read your post today I performed a test call to my cell phone voice mail. No chopping from my side today and everything was clear. This was with my firewall in place and the setup as originally posted.

I notice that when I do have poor quality people say there is a strange beep after every word that I say. Very, very strange.

I ran the other test you suggested and my info is as follows:

Me to Boston:

MOS = 4.3
Degradation Sources
Codec 79.5%
Latency 0.0%
Packet Discards 12.2%
Packet Loss 8.2%
Codec = G7.11 (PCM at 64kbps, 20ms RTP Payload, 80kbps IP BW)
Round-Trip Latency 171ms
Packet Discardds 0.4%
Packet Loss 0.3%
Loss Periods
Min: 20 ms
Avg: 20 ms
Max: 60ms
Random Loss
Jitter
Min: 0ms
Avg: 5ms
Max: 44ms

Signal Quality:
Post-Dial Delay 125ms
Call setup Time 141ms
Media Delay 297ms

Boston to Me

MOS = 4.4
Degradation Sources
Codec 93.0%
Latency 0.0%
Packet Discards 7.0%
Packet Loss 0.0%
Codec = G7.11 (PCM at 64kbps, 20ms RTP Payload, 80kbps IP BW)
Round-Trip Latency 171ms
Packet Discardds 0.4%
Packet Loss 0.0%
Loss Periods

Max: 74ms

Signal Quality:
Post-Dial Delay 154ms
Call setup Time 154ms
Media Delay 188ms

I'm going to try and record a crummy call to let you hear what it sounds like. I will also remove the M0n0wall box once it starts again.

By the way, check out M0n0Wall firewall at http://m0n0.ch/wall/ .

I have traffic shapping turned on have given the Vonage box top priority. It's very strange because I have used this configuration for months with no problems and in the last couple of weeks I have started having this problem. It is only my wife and myself so I have no kids to install crap on the network here are the house.

Other than the M0n0wall firewall I run a Cisco Catalyst 2924XL 10/100 switch. I'm setting up MRTG right now to monitor the traffic on the Vonage Terminal box as well as setting up a span port to run a sniffer on it to get a sample of the traffic.

The new test results look good, too. Let us know how things look when the bad stuff starts again.

Are you seeing any errors on the switchport that you have your Vonage ATA connected to?
