I have a neighbor that works for AT&T from SBC. He says that the billing systems are still keyed to phone numbers.
When I ordered standalone DSL service from Verizon, they actually gave me a phone number but told me that it is exclusively a data phone number and has no voice service. If I call in for support, then I give them that number for reference.
As far as pricing goes, I'm paying Verizon $34.95 for 12 months (3 MB down/768k up). I think if I had a landline from them, I would save $5 or so on the DSL. I'm not sure about cellphone as I have Cingular service and not Verizon. If I had AT&T DSL, I could've saved the $10 but Verizon is the phone company in my area.
$44.95 seems a bit high, but about the same Comcast is charging I guess.

The new AT&T has been given 1 year to implement "naked DSL". And by law they have to offer it for 2 years. This came from the feds. However what AT&T has done in California to get around this ruling is to offer "naked DSL" for only $1 less than what you would pay for DSL and a phone line. I'm in Texas and still can't get "naked DSL".Leave it up to AT&T to continue being the sneeky rats they have always been.
