PostPosted: Fri Aug 04, 2006 5:05 pm    Post subject: Intermittent choppy audio Reply with quote Back to top

I've had Vonage for about a month and after the first week I've had intermittent choppy audio (my voice is choppy to those I'm talking with, but I usually hear them fine). It happens about 25% of the time and sometimes will go from clear to choppy on the same call. I've tried lowering the call quality to the minimum with the bandwidth saver but that didn't seem to help. I've also tried bypassing the router without any noticeable improvement.

I'm in Fairfax VA.
I have Cox High Speed Internet Cable.
I have a Toshiba PCX2200 Cable Modem.
A Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Router.
The D-Link VTA-VD phone adapter.
My phones are 5.8 Ghz.

Here's my test results:
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 5423472 bps
Upload speed: 1477904 bps
Quality of service: 83 %

Any suggestions?

Your testyourvoip scores tell the story. On the downlink they're fine, and that jibes with your phone experience. On the uplink your discards and losses are too high, and that explains the poor outbound quality. Please plug a computer directly into your modem and repeat the test. If the results improve dramatically, we'll need to look at your router. If they don't, you have an issue to discuss with your ISP (I include your local modem as an ISP issue).

By the way, the testyourvoip results and the forum Voip results are inconsistent. Please report this in the Voip test thread. It's at the very top of the forum.

Thanks for the response Steve.

I connected directly to the modem (bypassing the router) and had almost identical results with the burst loss and the same MOS numbers.

When running a tracert, my connection to the modem seems normal (<1ms), so I'm guessing this is an issue with the ISP down the line. I have my doubts they'll going to be very accomodating since they offer their own IP service.

Yes, that's always the problem. If you have any symptoms not related to Voip you can try focussing on them.
