Has anyone tried the new VPhone and if so, can't you tell me the quality of the calls or does it sound like you are in a speakerphone?

It looks cheap, I wish I could forward my current # and account to it instead of an additional line and/or number...

I've had a V-Phone for a few weeks. In general, the sound quality is very good, though there is a slight delay in the conversation that can be very annoying. I've attempted (thus far without luck) to get Vonage to address this issue.

Also, I bought and am using a higher-quality headset to use with the V-Phone rather than the cheap headset that Vonage includes with it. I think that makes a difference.

What codec V-Phone used? I heard G.729 is the best codec for best quality and low bitrate.
I found plugin codec for G.729 http://www.vidosystem.com/download/vidog729.exe
the support said it is g729 acm driver codec only for Microsoft RTC Sip softphone.

thanks

Sorry, I have no idea how to determine the codec I am using, or what you're suggesting. If you can "translate," that'd be great!

You are right, some softphone like exten alow us to select codec G.729, ILBC, GSM, G711. Some other not able to select codec.
if you can't find codec supported by your softphone from softphone vendor.
I use this method, I call to an IP Phone (hardware), this IP phone can select codec to choose (not Auto Codec). If softphone codec is not supported then call from softphone to that IP Phone will be failed/rejected.

Another way is sniff the packet with ethereal. This is for advance user who know Voip protocol. Lol

The codec is handled the same way for the vphone as it is for the other devices, through the "bandwidth Saver" feature on the web account. Highest is g711 High is g726 and normal is g729. as for the quality of it, I am curious of that myself. My guess is that it would be at least partially dependent on the quality of the Internet Service and the PC itself.

I have the vphone and have been very pleased with the quality (once I ran the audio wizard). I use the cheap earbud that came with my blackberry (I don't like headphones in both ears) and it works really well. The only thing is the ringer is very loud in my ear compared to the volume of the conversation.
