PostPosted: Thu Aug 03, 2006 1:34 pm    Post subject: linksys WRTP54G -- Bad Wireless Connection Reply with quote Back to top

I've recently discovered that my linksys WRT54G has a poor wireless connection. I've moved the laptop within 3-5 feet radius off my notebook, and I still get a low signal strength (2 out 5 bar in showing in windows wireless config). At 10 feet and further, I've lost the connection. I've called the Vonage and linksys customer service repeteadly and finally get Vonage to replace the product. I hope this one doesn't turn out to be like that again.

So, I'm just curious if anyone actually had this problem too? Any solution? Because the Vonage customer service makes it sound like I'm the only one having this problem, not that I don't believe them, well I don't really. Anyway...

-My router firmware is 1.00.62.
-I'm using a PCMCIA netgear card on the router.
First one was a wireless-b. I was told by the Vonage rep that my card perhaps was faulty, then I bought another one.
It's a netgear wireless-g with 108mbps feature.
- Had all sorts of troubleshooting, changing SSID, channel, encryption, beacon interval, fragmentation length, RTS threshold to no avail.

edit: phone works fine, and the ethernet port works fine too.

PS: this is my first post, please be kind to me =)

I have had similar problems. My wireless network was working fine with my old router, now that I have switched to the Vonage linksys router I'm having problems.

When I try to connect to my router via wireless usb, I get all the way up to the point that it says connected, but its stuck on authenticating. I have tried it with now security settings, WEP, WPA, everything. Anyone else having these issues, or have a fix?

My WRTP54G had a horribly unreliable WiFi connection until I realized I still had my old WiFi router plugged in and running the exact same network settings. Unplugging the old one took care of the conflict, but it didn't completely resolve all the issues. The weak signal remained. So no, you're not alone.

That was hardly the only problem I had with my WRTP54G, so I just exchanged it for a PAP2 v2, which is now hooked up to my old reliable wireless router. The PAP2 seems to be a better phone adapter, and it's not tied to an all-around crappy router. Plus it has soft green LEDs, rather than obnoxious ultra-bright blue LEDs.

The LED color seems to vary on the PAP2s. I have 2 of them which have blue LEDs, while I just received a newer one with green LEDs. Not sure when the change was made.

I don't know whether I should be glad to know that I'm not alone with this problem but anyway now it looks that requesting an exchange on the same product that deems to fail is pretty stupid (exactly what I did). *sigh* I guess I wasted my $50 on a wireless router that never meant to work wirelessly.

So the only solution to this is to have another wireless router that is reliable for wireless connection and only use WRTP54G for phone adapter (and wired connection)?

The wireless signal from my WRTP54G is very good...I get great range. It sounds like the wireless in your old WRTP54G was just bad. Hopefully, the replacement WRTP54G will give you a considerably better wireless range.

If you're satisfied with the performance of the phone adapter part of the router, I'd say just go ahead use it only for that.

I guess it might also be handy to have the wireless function on hand, in case you take the router on the road and need WiFi access in addition to Vonage service.
