hi ,
i am located in chicago
i was thinking of switching over from att to vonage and thought i will do some review research first. i was very apprehensive when i saw all the complaints online about cust service. and then i stumbled upon your site which seems like the messiah for people like us.
well here is my problem / concerns about the cnxn:
we live in a townhouse basement . On the upper floor our uncle lives. we have currently a spt fone line. but we r sharing the comcast broadband with him. he has a dlink 624 router upstairs in his bedroom through which we get our internet signal.
we want to switch over to vonage. we approached my uncle for this and he told that though i can keep a vonage adapter upstairs but i cant keep our vonage phone there as he wants to have his privacy.
also he will be keeping his att phone line. so pls suggest how to connect vonage in our basement.and also get better sound quality at the same time??
my test details from testyourvoip are at:

i was thinking of a vtech ip 8100 or is a wireless bridge the right thing for us??
your advice will be highly appreciated.

I assume that your internet service is via the D-link's wireless signal. You have a couple of options. One would be a wireless bridge as you suggested, feeding a wired Vonage adapter. The other would be a wired Vonage adapter installed upstairs and plugged into line 2 in the house wiring. This assumes that the house has at least two lines and that one is unused. It also assumes that there's a jack in the basement apartment and that your uncle doesn't object to all this. A third option would be a cordless phone with a separate charger for the handset, allowing you to install the base upstairs.
I prefer the wired approach. It does have the disadvantage that resetting the adapter would require disturbing your uncle, but you might get higher quality that way. Your VoIP score is OK, but not great on the uplink. A wired connection might help. |

thanks a lot steve for the info however since i am new to all this i would appreciate if u can give me more details on this.
as you have suggested:

There is a separate line 2 in the house wired in the basement apartment but i don't think it has a jack upstairs. We are currently using it for our AT&T phone line. Since there is no line 2 jack upstairs what do i do to plug the adapter in the basement wiring?
If I follow the above method which adapter should i buy and will that work with a normal phone set or do i have to take a special set. i need to know the brand names please.
thanks again |

It is likely the wiring is available upstairs for line two without a second jack. You can check this by buying a L1 L2 splitter (RadioShack) and plugging a phone into it and checking to see if your AT&T dialtone from the basement is present.
Even if line 2 was separately run to the basement it is likely there are unused wires in the upstairs that could be jumpered to the basement wiring at the NID (where the phone lines enter the house). But this would be more complex. |

Fizzbizz, sorry I missed your reply, but it looks like Scerruti has answered your question. Expanding on it just a bit, when you plug the L1/L2 splitter into your uncle's jack, you should hear his phone on the L1 port, and you hope to hear yours on the L2. If that's the way it is, you just disconnect your existing landline from the house wiring, and plug the Vonage adapter into the L2 port on the splitter to get service downstairs. If you don't hear your phone on the L2 port, then, as Scerruti says, you can probably still make it work by changing things at the NID. |
