I just ran the test and the quality of service has been in the 40-50% range indicating that my sound should be choppy right now.

The explanation that I received after running the test was pretty vague.

Can someone explain if "quality of service" refers to an ISP thing?

I am at my last wit with Vonage. Hell I am even holding on the phone for tech support right now as I am typing!

Thanks

In terms of the Vonage speed tests, Quality of Service is a measurement of the consistency of the speed.

For example, if you get 56kpbs, but you ALWAYS get 56kpbs, then your "Quality of Service" would be pretty high (your connection is very predictable).

On the other hand, if your speed varied wildly between 5mbps and 20mpbs, even though both numbers are very good, your service varies widely in quality. Therefore, your Quality of Service is low.

Quality of service is a measure of predictability/consistency. If your connection runs at a consistent and predictable speed, then you have a high Quality of Service, which is independent of the actual speed your connection can support.

You may want to go back to the test link and follow the link to the FAQ. There's a good discussion there that goes into a lot more detail than I have.

What Is Quality of Service?

QoS refers to the ability of a network to provide improved service to selected network traffic over various underlying technologies. In particular, QoS features provide improved and more predictable network service by implementing the following services:

•Supporting dedicated bandwidth

•Improving loss characteristics

•Avoiding and managing network congestion

•Shaping network traffic

•Setting traffic priorities across the network

It was my experience that low QoS was related to my ISP (Comcast) not Vonage. My issue was corrected by getting Comcast to replace the modem. I am now a happy Vonage user.

Yes, since the "Vonage Speed Test" is not technically connecting to Vonage's actual Voip servers, it is purely a test of your connection (ISP) and not Vonage's servers themselves.

One of the better tests is to get the IP of the Vonage SIP server you are connecting to. It is not necessarily the same server or even in the same city for outgoing and incoming. Here are IP's of NJ and LA servers but they are not necessarily the ones you are connecting to depending on your location. Try run pingplotter on them. You want ping times below 100ms and jitter below say 20ms.
Vonage NJ SIP server 69.59.248.59
Vonage LA SIP server 69.59.243.184

PingPlotter freeware

You can also download a 30 day trial of the Pro version which calculates jitter as opposed to just showing it graphically. It also lets you run multiple simultaneous traces.
