PostPosted: Sun Jul 30, 2006 6:35 pm    Post subject: Motorola VT2442 Headaches Reply with quote Back to top

I just got a Motorola VT 2442 to replace a Linksys RTP300. The RTP300 developed an annoying 60 cycle hum that was audible during conversations.

After hours with tech support on my prepaid cel phone (yes expensive), Vonage decided that they would let me pay to ship the defective RTP300 as per their Terms of Service.

I got a new Motorola VT 2442 from them. This stopped the 60 cycle hum. I can hear anyone who calls me great, but they say that it is choppy at random. I called my house and talked to someone there and couldn't believe how bad the choppiness gets.

I did the test at the top of the page but accidentally exceeded the daily useage.

I am using Comcast Cable 6MB service.

Some of the results that I do remember are as follows:

4 MBPS Download
250 KBPS Upload

20 % Jitter...hmmm that doesn't seem good.

I am using a Uniden 2.4 GHZ (non-vonage) base unit with 2 additional base units in the house.

The problem persists even if a non-cordless phone is used.

I am running 2 pc's and a network printer, which all use static IP addresses. There is no wireless in my home, and all nodes are connected directly to the back of the VT 2442. The VT 2442 is connected directly to my modem.

Neither of my pc's have spyware or viruses, and the problem persists even when all patch cables for printer and machines are removed from the VT 2442.

I did notice what I believe to be the culprit, but I am having a hard time determining what the cause is.

I did a constant ping to a reliable site like www.yahoo.com from one of my computers. I engaged in a conversation. The conversation was clear for about 7 minutes then the other person complained that I was "breaking up"...at the same time, I was getting time outs exactly when that happened.

I called Comcast, and they said they will send someone out.

Another thing that threw me for a loop was the fact that I disconnected the VT 2442 altogether and ran it directly to my computer. After waiting 10 minutes I could find no evidence of any more dropped packets.

The problem is driving me nuts, and seems to point at both the router and the ISP.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I know for a fact there is a bug in the v2442 on the data side i.e. port forwarding does not work.

I would not be suprised if there are other problems with the router.

My voice was ok when it was my primary router, now that I am putting it back through a D-Link we will see.

I am going to contact Motorola directly on my issues.

When I first got my 2442 both inbound and outbound audio was choppy.

I called Vonage; the rep did some adjustments to the 2442; had me reboot; all was well after that.

Did you call Vonage again? They are probably the only ones that can help.

There are settings they, and only they, can make internally to the 2442 that will affect audio quality. Believe me: I have had to do it twice.

I called 4 times. I might call again, but the higher up the tech support ladder I have gotten, the longer it seems I have to wait to talk to anyone.

The jitter factor and the timeout factors also concern me.

Thanks again.

How do those factors look if you take the VT out of the setup and repeat the test?
