Post subject: Motorola VT2442 or D-Link VTA?
I live in Bentonville, Arkansas and I plan to get
Vonage
service. I just wanted to ask if I should get the Motorola VT2442 or the D-Link VTA phone adapter?
I currently have a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router and I'm planning to get a wireless router, but I'm not sure which one. Any suggestions with that would be great too.
One last thing....I ran the testyour
VOIP
.com test and I've gotten every MOS # between 3.3 and 4.0. Below are my results from the
VOIP
test from this board...
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 4491568 bps
Upload speed: 521304 bps
Quality of service: 71 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 57 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 74 ms
Average round trip time to server: 91 ms
VoIP
test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 5.6 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 9.5 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.2 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported
VoIP
lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.8
Are these results good enough to run a single phone line with little-to-no phone quality problems? I've never had
VOIP
, so I'm learning slowly. Thanks to this board, I know not to buy a 2.4GHz phone because of the interference with WiFi, so thanks!

your numbers look ok.
get a linksys wrt54gl wireless router. I've noticed less complaints about the dlink than the vt2442, but it may just be because the dlink isn't out there as much.

I use the D-Link VTA and so far I have no problems with the device. I coupled it with the D-Link DI-102 and the
VOIP
quality is great.
A friend of mine who uses the Motorola unit, just told me his unit crashed after being in service for less than a month, and
Vonage
would have to ship him a new unit. Based on the experiences of my friend and myself, I would avoid the Motorola and go with the D-Link.
Nothing personal against Motorola, but I have never had good experiences with their products.

I'm also about to sign up and can't decide which one of these to get. I currently have a PAP2 active with "another
VoIP
provider" and am happy with that. If I choose the VT2442, it won't be used as a router, so that's not a plus. I'm more interested in which one people have had fewer problems with.
It will be used with Comcast behind a Linksys WRT54G.
(Not at home, so can't post other specs.)

I think you'd do fine with a PAP2, a D-link VTA, or a VT2442 behind your Linksys. If you already have a PAP2 then I see no reason to spend more money. However, be prepared for the possibility that your PAP2 is not on
Vonage
's "approved MAC" list. If it isn't, they won't activate it.

Steve -- thanks for the response. I meant to say that my PAP2 is currently active with another provider. I'll be getting new equipment from
Vonage
and was just wondering if one (VT2442 or D-Link VTA) was better than the other.
Thanks again.

In terms of voice quality, I imagine they're about the same. I have personal experience with the VT2442 and none with the D-link, but I haven't been reading any big complaints about the D-link. The VT2442 is, of course, a router/adapter. The D-link VTA, like the PAP2, has no router built in.
