Sometimes conversations are only one way. I can hear them but they can't hear me. Several calls are choppy and the quality-of-service (VoIP) is very poor whether we are using the corded or 2.4 GHz cordless phone.
I'm not noticing problems with my internet connection. The service seems to stay up with decent upload and download speeds for the DSL service I subscribe to.
The Voip speed tests from this forum is a great find. I only hope that I can get some assistance interpreting the results. I did a couple of tests this evening and the results were similar. My concern is with the jitter. I thought that jitter has to do with congestion and comes from my router (or the carrier network if the service was provisioned properly). Also, what is download pause and how does that affect Voip?
How can I determine if this is my provider's problem or my own?
Speed test statistics --------------------- Download speed: 2876792 bps Upload speed: 740248 bps Quality of service: 99 % Download test type: socket Upload test type: socket Maximum download pause: 84 ms Average download pause: 4 ms Minimum round trip time to server: 17 ms Average round trip time to server: 19 ms

Actually your numbers all look pretty good. Please run a comparison test with a call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com and post the detailed results here. |

I called my provider today. Their level 1 tech support can't provide much help, but I figured that Vonage Tech Support would ask me if I spoke with them.
Thank-you for examining these numbers for me.
Last night I received an MOS of 3.8 Tonights results: To Boston / From Boston MOS: 3.42 / 4.05 Codex: 0.58 / 0.57 Latency: 0 / 0 Discards: 1.00 / 0.38 Packet Loss: 0 / 0 Round-Trip Latency: 168 ms / 168 ms Packet discards: 4.8% / 2.2% Loss Periods Min: 20 ms / 20 ms Avg: 60 ms / 100 ms Max: 420 ms / 200 ms Jitter Min: 0 ms / 0 ms Avg: 4 ms / 2 ms Max: 520 ms / 461 ms Post-Dial Delay: 80 ms / 205 ms Call Setup Time: 110 ms / 164 ms Media Delay: 310 ms / 239 ms
I know that 300+ ms is not very long, but the periods of lost conversation is closer to 5 to 10 seconds. I assumed that if this site's test results indicated that 9 ms is spotty, it might mean something. |

Are those test results from www.testyourvoip.com or from the forum test? They don't look familiar. In any case, packet discards of 4.8% up and 2.2% down are pretty bad. They would explain the choppiness. Try plugging your computer directly into your modem and repeating the test. Unless it gets substantially better, you have an internet service issue (which includes your local modem) that you need to work with your ISP. |
