Everything working now. Guess the problem was a fluke?
I powered everything down and left it off for an hour or so reconnected and everything is now ok

The main thing after an outage like that is to power up in the correct order. Typically you power up the modem, then wait, then power up the main router (if you have more than one), wait, then the next router, then the computers.

I just went through two days of major outages. On the first day, the phone came on line by itself each time the power was restored (3 times). Today, after one outage, I had to manually sequence the system to get the phone back on line.

Small UPSs are realively cheap. If you use them for only small network devices, they can run a long time. You should, at least, be able to properly power down the network devices, and it will prevent the return of power spike from damaging them. Just don't use them for power hungry devices like PCs, monitors, printers, etc. You need a much larger and more expensive UPS model for those.

I thought I had things all set with a UPS. I have a moderately sized one with software to shut down the PC rather quickly. The plan was to keep the PC from crashing badly, then keep the network devices up.

Unfortunately the shutdown software has a little quirk that I didn't know about. After shutting down the PC it automatically shuts itself off to "save the battery"! That can't be overridden with the manufacturer's software, but they've told me that it will work with XP's built in UPS service. I'll try that after the battery has had a chance to recovery from the fun of the past two days.

I always get a separate UPS for the network infrastructure devices. I get a bigger UPS for the high powered devices, but most of my PCs are laptops that have their own batteries. It doesn't matter so much if the bigger devices go down since I will still have my network connection (I can use with a laptop) and my phone.

xbatmanx - Being from Berks County I know what you mean about the power outages, especially from the last storm. I have a small UPS and have DSL through Commonwealth so even when the cable goes out I am still good to go with my long distance. It's worth it for the battery power and good protection against a power surge...
