Hi guys,

I've looked all over the net, including the Vonage forums, but I havent' found any info on this.

I have been transferred to Jakarta, Indonesia starting in September, and I was wondering if anyone has tried using Vonage Voip over broadband in Jakarta? Please let me know! Thanks in advance!

it's better to contact ISP of that city you'd be going too.. make sure that there's no 'banning Voip rule' in there..

(just correct me again) so far, i only know S.Korea and some parts of Saudi that has this

I've heard reports of some countries in South and Central America that has banned it as well. I believe any country that has a government or private monopoly running the show for ISP and telephone service will almost inevitably ban Voip. it makes no sense to give people an alternative when they can rake in their millions. I would not be surprised if Jakarta is one of those.

I’m working on installing Vonage in Indonesia too. I sent a vetch phone to my sister in Jakarta. She has internet from a company called Corbec. They say they provide “broadband wireless internet” service. I’m not familiar with this kind of internet. Its not cable or DSL. There is no modem given. There is a central device placed somewhere in the apt building & an Ethernet cable is provided which directly connects to the computer

When we connect Vonage phone inbetween, the internet connection is lost. The Vonage rep asked us to key in the ip address of the Vonage device in the browser & configure it for dynamic ip address. We are not able to connect to the Vonage phone also. We tried getting help from the cable company but unfortunately they hardly can understand or speak English. Any suggestions on how to proceed further

I gather that your computer does get internet connectivity when plugged into this service. Were any special instructions given for the configuration of your computer? Exactly how is it configured?

sampi,

if your sister runs the Voip speed test on this forum from her computer, she should be able to figure out if the connection can handle a good connection.

By the name of the connection, i.e. wireless connection, I would suspect that you will get less than good quality since wireless connections have a great deal of lag and especially since its being shared by a lot of people.

I would suspect that you will need to connect your Vonage router to your computer and setup internet connection sharing etc. It's more complicated. Perhaps others with experience with connection wirelessly can help here. I've never done that.

You can also do a search on this forum for wireless connection and you should get some instructions on how to set up internet connection sharing (ICS).

Perhaps you can try cloning the physical address of the comp in the Vonage device . you need to login and clone the mac id of the comp in the router.

If you're going to do the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), your computer should be turned ON all the time since the Vonage phone will rely on the connection coming from the internet.

I have also searched Corbec and found out that most of their connections are wireless. Since wireless connection is not that reliable because you have to share connections, I suggest that you should find an internet provider that gives highspeed broadband connection. FYI, Vonage devices require 90 kbps for voice only. That's why you need highspeed connection so you can have both voice and internet working properly.

One more thing, just in case you'll get your Vonage phone working with wireless connection, there's a possibility that the line will be choppy or you'll experience audio problem.

Thanks everyone for your advise. I was caughtupin things & could not post. Anyways....I got the phone up & running today. Contrary to what was expected, the call quality was pretty decent though not the best. However the internet problem exists.

The Vonage phone works but the internet does not. The challenge is that my sister is not knowledgeable about the computer & cannot tell me as to how the internet was configured. The technician is saying that another device is needed for the internet to work.I'm not sure if this is truely necessary or if there is a way without this. Unfortunately we would have to figure out ourselves. What could be the possible things I can instruct my sister to try
