PostPosted: Wed Jul 26, 2006 7:47 pm    Post subject: Bell Sympatico High Speed Unplugged Reply with quote Back to top

I just got a brochure for this Bell High Speed Unplugged service and as I am getting ready to move I am thinking this would be a good option rather than paying Shaw to transfer to my new place.

Does anyone have any idea if my Vonage will work with this service from Bell? The Bell site just dodges the Voip question by saying that all Voip providers are different and they can't make any guarantees.

Thanks!

did you know that the Bell and Rogers wireless internet service are the same service? called Inukshuk (sp) they actually worked together to start this service off, this way they can cut the cost in half from their end..

I haven't looked at the bell site, but what rogers says is it's (I think) 1.5M (maybe only 1, or 1.2) down and 256K up.. ($49/mo tho) the speed should be ok, but not sure if there's any latency involved in this.. right now it may be very good, as it's new and not alot of users on it, as it gets more popular it may degrade..

I have been thinking this too, as we are thinking of moving and some places we're thinking of do not have DSL or Cable Sad unfortunatly Inukshuk is also not avail in those areas Sad

If you get a good signal from your location then it supposedly is about as good as ADSL for ping times and speeds. They are still working some kinks out but people seem generally satisfied with it.

This may work, but in all honestly if you have other options they are most likely better. Your connection through the cell service will have a high latency and high packet loss. You may be able to get it working but you will need to find a good tech support guy to get you up and running.

Edit: as a side note in most rural areas a broadband wireless connection works quite well. Even satellite can be acceptable.

I have the sympatico unplugged service with a full 5 bar signal. I am not sure what is wrong, but I have a very bad Vonage connection all the time. When I do internet speed tests, I get 2400+ download, and 240+ upload (my service is listed as 3 mbit 70 bucks a month) I have tried everything in the troubleshooting guide, I am going to call Vonage tonight to see if they can help with the problem, but I fear that it doesn't work all that well with the wireless service (unless my Vonage box has some problem I don't see anything else that it could be)

$70.00 a month for internet, wow that is really expensive especially at the speeds they are giving it to you. I get 10 mb down with 640 up with Cogeco for $50 a month.

I am a country Geek, not a city Geek, I have only two options for my internet, wireless, and dialup. I have to bite the bullet and live with my sympatico for now (probably for the next ten years) BTW your cogeco is probably 6 meg down, and 640k up (just moved out to the county, used to have cogeco at my house in the city, the ten meg service was 80 bucks a month.) I just called bell and had them hook me up to a land line again. I spent two hours on the phone with tech support, they told me to try different things, then hang up and make a few calls, then call them if it wasn't resolved, I did that twice (LONG WAIT TIMES ON HOLD), then decided they were never going to get it right, so I did the deed. So long Vonage, maybe when I have a non wireless internet connection. I only bothered to post this because I feel that the problem was not Vonage, but the high speed unplugged, and I haven't found anyone yet to prove me otherwise.

Hate to say it there country boy, but you are incorrect with the speeds and pricing of Cogeco.

Up To 640 down and Up to 10 MB down all for $47.95 because I only have the internet with them.

Here is the link: Cogeco

I hate DSL, I had Bell and Primus and never had good speeds out of them.

Go to speedtest.net and do a speed test on your system.

I understand if you are in the country and you only have 2 options, dial up which **** and wireless at the outrages price, then you need to pay the money to get a better service.

Stop hijacking this thread Cogeco boy!

Of course wired speeds and prices are better. That is NOT the reason people pay more for the wireless service.

Now, what were we talking about again?

to put us back on track, I was pointing out the answer to the original post. Someone had asked if Vonage worked with high speed unplugged, and I have pointed out that after much troubleshooting with and without Vonage tech support, I was unable to achieve a reliable connection.
