I can't seem to get any decent voice quality for this phone! It is choppy, lots of static and sometimes dropped audio. Sometimes there is static feedback- very loud. Mostly it's just, "you're breaking up" and " I didn't hear what you just said". Usually I can hear them just fine, for outgoing and incoming calls. I have the phone and adpater from the US so that I can call out from a US number and I was assured this was possible. I don't think it's because the box won't run here.
I am using the Vtech8100-one handset. I have everything connected as so:Shaw Motorola SB5101 modem+Dlink DI-624 wireless router+Vtech 8100 phone base.
I have a wireless network in my apt. connected to 2 pcs, one desktop (accessing the web via a wireless card) and one laptop, wireless access too.
I have tried:
-putting the phone base outside of the router (i.e. firewall)- slight but intermittent imporvement
-securing the network
-max. band width on the Vonage saver
-attempted to port forward but cannot access Vtech mange site (http://192.168.15.1) and it's also very complicated to me. Even the Vonage CSR (US & CAN) didn't know what I was referring to when I asked about it.

If anyone can offer any advice I would be truly grateful. Also, if anyone has any experience in the Vancouver area with paying Shaw the extra $10 and whether its' worth it, I'd like to know.

Much thanks.

Where are you located?

What is your ping time to one of the Vonage NJ gateways?
IP 69.59.248.59

For sure I would get rid of the Dlink 624. Those routers are notoriously flaky for a lot of people. Not everyone but a lot of people report problems with those. Especially anything prior to D revisions.

Thanks for your time! I am located in Richmond, B.C (Just outside Vancouver).
I was hoping not to have to shell ot for another router, but which one would you suggest? My Dlink is the C-revision, too. I'm guessing from your reply that you think it's the router and that paying an extra $10 to shaw for the QoS is not worth it?

My ping time to the IP you listed is:
Ping Status 69.59.248.59
Packets sent=4, Received=4, Lost=0 (0% lost)
Approx. roundtrip times in miliseconds:
Min=106ms, Max=230ms, Average=149ms

Thanks again.

230ms is an awfully big number! I am on standard Shaw with the Motorola modem in Kelowna. My route to the same IP is Kelowna, Vancouver, Seattle and on to Vonage NJ so my route is the same as yours and even a bit longer. I NEVER get 230ms. The most I get is about 120ms.

So seeing as how you are also on Shaw, I doubt it is Shaw and the enhanced package will not likely change your ping times. It might be your internal network (like the Dlink) or the wiring to your house. Phone Shaw support and ask them to look at your modems signal strength. They can do it remotely right then and there.

Get a Linksys WRT54GL. You won't be sorry!

btw,

Try a tracert to that same IP and see exactly where the largest delay is happening. Is there a big delay right at the first public IP trace or later on the Shaw part of the trip or further on as it goes through the US?

thanks for your help. I'm not sure hoe to run a tracer to the same IP? When I pinged it before I used the command screen and pinged it.

I will look into getting the Linksys as well- if there's no improvement within a few days then at least I can return it!

Thanks again

Type in the following at a command prompt (">" is the command prompt so do not include that)

>tracert 69.59.248.59

An even better alternative is to run pingplotter which will continually monitor the delay along the route and give you some idea of jitter (the horizontal lines). Try reduce the trace interval to 1 second. The 30 day trial of the pro version also calculates the jitter as opposed to just showing it graphically and allows simultaneous traces to multiple IP's.

thanks for your help. Everything seems to begin to be sluggish as soon as shaw routes through Washington and then really hits the highest slow point in New York (from what I can tell on the tracerts).

Anyway, I'm shopping for the Linksys! Thanks again for your time.

It should not slow down that much once it hits the states. My packets travel the same route. A new router certainly won't change that.
