Hey guys,
Ive had Vonage for around 4-6 months now...everything worked fine until i woke up this morning...i picked up the phone and there was no dial tone...i checked all connections did all reboots
i have my set up like this
cable modem>router>voip router>wall jack
everything used to work fine, i cant think why its not working..i also tried hooking just one phone up to the Voip box and the box directly to the cable modem...no luck
do you guys think something is wrong with my Voip box?
what could be causing the problem?

I'm in Vermont and have the same issue. Sometimes I get a dialtone, sometimes not. If I do get one, outgoing calls are mainly busy signals. If it does connect, you can't understand a single word on the other end.

Here are my tests. I think there is a problem on their end, but tech support wait time is >15min and I didn't want to eat up my cellphone.

I can't offer any SUGGESTIONS yet, just an insight -- if you've posted the Voip stats correctly (and I'm guessing you just cut and paste), it is a wonder you can hear anything at all. The jitter is unbelievable -- under 10 ms would typically be good; 10 - 20 ms would typically result in a little bit of breakup, but still be Ok, and more than 20 ms starts to get troublesome. Your test shows 400 - 700. That is well over 10 times worse than the point where the Voip test shows Voip as "Unsupported". You also show a packet loss of almost 20%; this would be almost like having 1 out of every 5 words spoken drop out of the conversation.

You've not mentioned who / what your Internet provider is, please post that for some additional troubleshooting.

I realize the jitter is way beyond reasonable limits, but since I am having no internet performance issues, I assume it's something to do with Vonage. Is that not the case?

My ISP is Adelphia. I've rebooted everything (Motorola Modem, DLink router and Vonage phone adapter. No difference. I am currently without a dialtone and have been for the last couple of hours.

I was going to send another test result, but Vonage puts a limit on the number of times you can run it. Bogus. And yes, the results posted earlier was a simple copy/paste.

I am doubting if I should have switched and just have stayed with Ma-Bell. Costs more but never had BS issues like this.

No. Jitter is a variation in the delay, and we are talking about fractions of a second. This is not something you would really notice surfing the web. It only causes problems with streaming video and audio, and other protocols that are timing dependent.

You can even have a lot of dropped packets and not really notice it on TCP based applications (web browsing) because TCP will request missing traffic to be resent. Voip uses UDP which is a "best effort" delivery. Resending lost traffic won't work because the sound will be out of order. It has to arrive regularly and in order. The protocols can miss a few, and they can compensate for a little jitter, without much harm to the sound, but any large variation in the delay or missing blocks of traffic become very evident.

i fixed my problem, i needed this fixed so i called them up...took almost 3 hours...because my cell phone kept dropping calls due to me being in my basement...he did something over at the hq and changed it so i ran threw the second line rather than the first....call them up after 9 so that way you dont waste your minutes

I finally have a connection again. Not sure what the deal was, but now everything seems ok. I can't run the performance test until tomorrow, but it seems as though this was something on the other end since it magically resolved itself.

Thanks rgnok and Maestro for the assistance.
