I hope that my autosignature line has the proper information.
We have finally gotten the hard wiring and cordless phones to work. We finally haven't had a problem calling out in ages.
We have learned that if we don't wait at least 2 rings to answer, the line will be dead. Unfortunately, that isnt' a guarantee that we will be able to talk with the person on the other end. There are still times when someone calls, we wait 2 rings and answer the phone and the line is dead. There are also times that we have heard about people calling us when we weren't home and the phone rang 2-3 times and then went dead instead of going to the answering machine. I have disconnected Vonage's voicemail and use the answering machine that is attached to the phone. Often we get messages on the answering machine without a problem.
We seem to have more problems when the person calls us from a cell phone, but at times a landline has also given us trouble.
Any brilliant ideas? Hubby wants to go back to a landline.

Is the SMC router a wireless? Are your cordless phones 2.4 GHz?

When you answer the phone, does the phone light on the RTP300 flash as it should when your phone is off hook? Is it solid when you hang up? Does it behave the same on occasions that you have trouble and on occasions when you don't?

The SMC is a wireless router, but the Linksys is hooked up by cable to it. The cordless phones are 5.8 (I think that's the next step over 2.4)
We haven't ever paid attention to the RTP300 when answering the phone. I did just unhooked the phone and the light started blinking and it went solid when I hung up, but as I said, we've never paid attention to it before. I will try to have my family pinpoint that. Of course when no one answers the phone and it doesn't go to the answering machine we won't know about that.
Thanks for your initial help.

Well, I was finally able to check and see when we get calls, the blue light stays steady until I pick up the phone. Then it starts blinking. However sometimes I can hear the person and other times I can't.
What does this mean?

It means that the light is behaving normally- blinking to indicate a phone off hook and steady to indicate that you have service with the phone on hook. Since it's working that way both when your calls go normally and when they don't, it indicates that the problem is probably not in your local setup- phone hookups and so forth- and that you're not losing service prior to the phone ringing.

Unfortunately, troubleshooting intermittent problems is a bear. Have you run the forum Voip test and/or the test at www.testyourvoip.com ?

yes, the testyourvoip.com has me at

Your score: 4.3

does that help?
yes, I hate trying to fix intermittent problems. So if it's not a problem with the local setup where else could the problem be? It happens with a connected phone and a wireless phones. Often the incoming call is from a cell or a calling card, however not all the time. sometimes the person is calling from a typical land line.

Thanks for trying to help. As I said, my husband is ready to get rid of the whole thing, but I don't want to!

Normally I'd ask for the details on the testyourvoip test, but with a score of 4.3 the results are all bound to be good. I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of ideas, but if you can stand to be without wireless for awhile you might try going to the simplest setup you can have for awhile: modem->adapter->phone. If that fixes the problem we'll at least have somewhere to look.

Thanks for the help. We'll continue to look and maybe try without the other phones.
