PostPosted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 8:28 pm    Post subject: Specifying DNS on WRTP54G Reply with quote Back to top

I have a DNS problem and my ISP gave me the appropriate IPs and suggested using 4.2.2.2 as a backup. Previous posts indicate to do this go to the "Basic Setup" tab and their should be a "DNS Proxy" setting to DISABLE. I don't seem to have that setting. Only way is for me to specify and DNS seem to be to change from "Obtain IP Automatically" to "Static IP". My ISP doesn't allow static IP. Am I missing something?

My current firmware is 1.00.29! Seems like it was 1.00.62 a few weeks back. Is this something that was added after 1.00.29? If so, how do I get my router to re-pull the updated firmware?

Thanks!

Typically, the modem will connect to the broadband ISP to get the IP which could be any of a set domain. Once the modem has this IP it will process the information and pass to either a router or computer. Thus your computer "typically" should be set to obtain an IP address automatically. As well as a DNS address. It doesn't make sense that you should need to specify a specific DNS or IP unless perhaps you are using a commercial account and have a static set IP address for hosting from a server on your line.

For more information on troubleshooting this issue and any other internet related issue I would highly recommend visiting

Is it working

Just useful information in general for this type of thing.

Thanks for the quick reply. My PCs are set to obtain automatically, but the modem is pulling the incorrect DNS from the ISP. My ISP (insightBB, lexington, KY) just did a big upgrade and is still sorting out the DNS stuff I think. Their rep suggested just hard coding the DNS settings on the router as those are the official ones for my ISP and will not change.

Problem is, although a procedure is referenced by others on the forums, it doesn't seem to be an option on my WRTP54G firmware 1.00.29. Don't know if I'm blind and just can't find the setting or if it's a firmware thing.... still not sure why I seem to be downgraded back to 1.00.29!

There seem to be a couple of issues here. First, you're correct that the current firmware should be .62 . I don't know why you're back at .29, but it needs to get upgraded. I have a vague recollection that there were problems getting an upgrade when ancient firmware was running- something to do with memory. If I recall, the solution was to disable wireless until the upgrade completes. You might want to search the archives.

The other thing is that I think you're confusing DNS and DHCP. You should have your unit set to get it's IP automatically, and it should probably be set to act as a DHCP server, but you want to disable DNS. All of those things should be on the basic tab as you've been told. It may be an issue with that ancient firmware.

Thanks for the reply Steve. I did find those posts. Disabled wireless and am waiting for the firmware. Read something about partially upgraded firmware causing problems too and only way to fix that would be a manual reset. Don't want to do this unless I can get ahold of the firmware binary.... the thought of going even further back to .12 or something following a reset and trusting the new update will come scares me. Eek

In regards to DNS. I am set to obtain IP automatically, and have dhcp on for my internal network and Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is off. And it's true typically the ISP feeds users the correct IP/DNS entries, but InsightBB is having difficulty with some DNS servers and suggested I bypass this by forceably setting them to the current official ones.

I'm definitely need to do this as I am having a DNS problem.... often typing in URLs to commom websites (like www.cnn.com) and getting "not found" only to hit reload and have the page come up. This happens with about 50% of my typed URLs and I think this may be contributing to my significant, albeit intermittent, packet drops and poor "QoS" leading to all around crappy service.

Anyone have suggestions on where I can get the official WRTP54G 1.00.62 firmware binary if it's never delivered automatically? Or do I have dial up Vonage and hopefully get a good tech?

Thanks!

First off, if you do a factory reset, it will not revert your firmware to an older version. So feel free to do a factory reset (press the RESET button for more than 30 seconds with power applied). That might clear up whatever is blocking the new firmware.

However, it should simply be a matter of turning off wireless, restarting the router, and waiting. If you see the POWER light start to blink, the firmware is updating - DO NOT TOUCH THE ROUTER while this happens.

There are instructions around here on loading a more recent firmware manually. If I can find them, I'll link to them.

Update: OK, I found all the various sets of instructions, including the links to various firmware versions for the WRTP54G and RTP300. I consolidated all the information on one page, and put it here in a new article on my Vonage reference pages:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/upgrade.html

Special thanks to members like ColdGin and others for posting the original source material. Wink

From there, you can follow my article on setting up DNS:

Gotta love Insight, huh? I was with them when I lived in Lexington. Wink

pempey -

Also, if you need to bypass the DNS settings, you can do it PC-by-PC if you cannot get the settings to work in yoru WRTP54G.

Once you get 1.00.62, however, it should be a matter of setting it in the router's main setup screen. I'd also bypass the DNS Proxy Server in the WRTP54G while you are at it (it's pretty weak).

Dunno. Probably like a number of the reps who used to volunteer here, he got tired of trying to be a "one man support team" in his spare time.

Can't honestly say I blame him, though he was the one who got my volume issues and a few other things straightened around, and he is missed. As are all the other people who actually worked for Vonage and could help out with issues that could only be sorted out on the Vonage side.
