PostPosted: Sun Jul 23, 2006 12:27 pm    Post subject: Losing internet connection and others can't hear me - choppy Reply with quote Back to top

I am in Michigan

My ISP is Comcast

My upload / download speeds are below

My modem is a Scientific Atlanta DPC2100

My adapter is a Linksys RT31P2

My cable line is connected to my modem. My modem is connected to my adapter and my desktop pc is connected to my adapter. Also attached to my adapter is my Netgear WGR614 for my wireless laptop and printer. However the wireless feature only works intermittently, so both are connected to that router by cables.

I don't know much about modems, adapters, and routers. But I have to reset my modem and adapter several times a day to maintain an internet connection. Also, when I am using the phone, others have problems hearing me - the connection gets choppy. I can hear them fine.

To my untrained eye, the test below looks fine which seems odd to me for all the problems I am having. The test results I get on www.testyourvoip.net range from 2.8 - 3.5.

Any help with these two problems would be greatly appreciated!

There seems to be a substantial difference of opinion between the forum Voip test and the testyourvoip test in this case. Please post the detailed results from the latter. Also, if you're using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, please replace it temporarily with a corded phone and see how that works.

You have excessive packet discards in both directions, but especially on the uplink. That's probably the reason that people are finding your voice to be choppy. Temporarily remove your adapter and plug your computer directly into your modem. Repeat the testyourvoip test. If you have a substantial improvement in packet discards, then we need to look at your adapter. If you don't, then the problem is with your ISP (which includes your modem).

Below are the results without the Vonage adapter. I am guessing the problem is with Comcast, since my score is even lower than before. What do I tell them to get results on researching the problem?

Ah, there's the rub. I agree that the problem seems to be with them, but ISPs aren't too likely to take much responsibility for services for which they are only indirectly responsible. If you have anything related to their basic service that isn't right, then focus on that. If not, just give it to them straight- you have results indicating high packet discards and it's interfering with Voip communications.

I lose my internet connection several times a day so I will focus on that. Yesterday I lost my connection probably 25 times. It has never been that bad. I will call Comcast. At the very least, maybe I can get the modem exchanged and maybe I will be lucky enough for that to be the problem.

Thank you for your help.

Sounds like you've got the right approach. Let us know how it turns out.
