I just purchased a WRT54GL wireless router and loaded it with the latest thibor code 15c. My configuration is as follows: Roadrunner cable modem>WRT54GL>RT31P2. I am running a desktop (ethernet) and the RT31P2 off the WRT54GL ethernet ports. The Rt31P2 is a Vonage router for my Voip. I also have a wireless laptop running off the WRT54GL.
The problem I am having is if the telephone (voip) is in use the desktop internet connection just hangs until the Voip call is terminated. The wireless laptop internet connection is not effected. I had QOS enabled on the WRT54GL with the upstream bandwidth set. I have since disabled that and still have the same issue.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

If you're using any sort of MAC cloning, you might try disabling that as well.

MAC cloning was disabled. Seems I had QoS set too high on the WRT54GL. I adjusted the value and now have excellent voice and internet response times at the same time. Also made a couple of changes to the RT31P2. Very happy with this setup.

I thought you still had issues after disabling QoS (?).

I did have problems with QoS disabled. If I ran an upload test while the Voip phone was being used the person on the other end picked up nothing but noise until the test ended.

So apparently you need just the "right" level of QoS to get decent service. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, could you tell me the exact settings that worked for you? I'm having the same problem, and it's driving me crazy. If I start using the phone, in a few seconds my internet connection effectively dies until I hang up. Any wireless devices connected to the network even drop the connection and reconnect only after I stop using the phone. I tried to create a QoS rule for one of the ports (where the wireless router is connected to) but I'm not sure if I filled out that form correctly. Apparently not because i'm still having the same problems.

Thanks,

First, a little background on QoS:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html

If your Internet connection is completely dropping when on a call, this problem can be caused by two things:

1. You simply don't have enough bandwidth to support both a Vonage call and anything else. If this is the case, Vonage's "Bandwidth Saver" feature might help - set your bandwidth usage lower and see if it helps. Proper QoS can also help, the article above gives a quick brief, including why the QoS built into your Vonage router probably doesn't work.

2. (most often): You have a MAC address conflict in your local network. Somehow, two devices (one of them your Vonage router/adapter) have the same MAC address. Replies are sent to the port that MOST RECENTLY used that MAC address to send a request, so when you pick up your Vonage line, all traffic bound for your PC suddenly gets routed to your Vonage adapter. When you hang up, your PC starts getting replies again.

Thanks for the info. I guess it could be a bandwidth issue, not sure. The QoS page is a bit confusing to me, neither the online help nor the printed manual explains the settings completely. I'm using a Motorola VT2442, and one thing I noticed was that it's always the wireless connection that gets dropped, if I have my computer physically connected to the router, then the connection works even while using the phone. I also checked for any MAC address conflicts and didn't find any.

Are you using a 2.4Ghz cordless phone, by any chance? That uses the same frequency range as wireless.
