Hi: I've had Vonage for a year: it's wired to my desktop Mac. I want to add a wireless laptop.
I currently have the Vonage router (adapter) RT31P2, which is connected to my cable modem.
I've tried to wade through the archives for a simple answer, but everything is quite complicated -- does anyone speak "plain and simple"?
Questions: A) Is there a router (adapter) I can buy that will provide me with phone, ethernet cable and wireless connection? I would like to avoid having *two* routers and a modem sitting on my desk.
B) If not, what can I do to go wireless? Do I buy a second router and plug it into the first one (the RT31P2?) Which router would be best (and cheapest)?
C) I've read in past posts that the router Vonage sent me (the RT31P2) provides better quality (QoS??) and should be daisy-chained first. True?
D) If I have to get a second router to piggyback on the first one (is this called being a "switch"?), I'd like to get the slim and cheap LinkSys WRT54Gc. Any thoughts out there?
E) In general, what concerns should I have about P2P? I've read that it reduces quality? My current quality is fine. When I go wireless, will I have a problem?
Thanks to all of you who spend their time helping lost souls like me out.

The WRTP54G supplied by Vonage will do this. A lot of people would prefer the two router approach, but that's up to you.

That's what they usually say, but if I had a good wireless router with QoS settings that would favor the Vonage box, I'd prefer to put it first and put the Vonage adapter behind it. |
