I guess I can try it, and if it doesn't work I can always cancel the account---right? I mean, I don't think there is a contract commitment like a cell phone has.

There is a cancellation fee if you cancel between 30 days and a year. A lot of people have complained about trouble canceling. Just something to beware of.

Arlking,

How much is the cancelation fee? It seems to me that if you try it and it doesn't work they should be willing to cancel.

Bruce

It's $39.99. From the ToS:

3.6 Disconnection Fee (Does Not Apply to Business Plus Customers). You will be charged a disconnection fee of $39.99 per voice line if your Service is disconnected for any reason after the Money Back Guarantee period and within the first year following the activation of your Service.

Well, that's not so bad. It beats paying for an entire year. I think I'll just get one, take it to Brazil and try it, and if it doesn't work--cancel it. If I get it close enough to my trip, I might be able to test it within the 30 guarantee time and get it canceled before the time is up. If not, I'm only out 40 bucks plus one month's fee.

If this suckker works, it will sure make things easier communicating from Brazil to the USA.

We can discuss it ad infinitum, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating....

If you buy it at a retail store, wait until you get to Brazil to activate it. The 30 day eval. period will then start at that time.

Great tip! Thanks! I'm used to buying things online, is it better to buy in a store?

That could be debated for days, but in your case you'll get the full 30 day trial out of it if you do.

Correct, it starts the day you activate your account, which with Vonage means the day you sign up.

So if I buy it online, it is activated before I receive the device, but If I buy in in a store they don't activate it until the first time I use it? That seems strange to me.

Oh well, where do I go to buy it? And do I still get the device for free and the first 30 days free? If it isn't satisfactory do I have to return the device?

You can get them at Circuit City, Best Buy, and a bunch of other places. Check at the store regarding the return policy if you cancel within the 30 days, I think it's on Vonage's website as well.
