You probably can, but unless that box is in your apartment you had better leave it alone. Of course, if you get permission from the apartment owner or have him do the disconnect, that's a different story.
One alternative is to open the boxes on all the jacks in your apartment. You can sometimes spot the wires that are coming from the outside, as opposed to wires that are connecting the boxes together. If you can do that, you may be able to disconnect at that point without messing with things outside your unit. |

That is a MUX box and you wantto close that back up and leave it alone.
I would expect the box you are looking for to be close to the power meter. Some apartments have them in a separate room. You might also have an inside box. It would most likely be a baseboard thing that looks like an odd telephone box with a gizmo to lock in the wire.
In any case I assume you do not have regular telco service. Plug into one of your jacks and see if you get a dial tone. If you do, try to dial out, you should be taken to customer service to have your service turned on. When they get on the phone have them physically disconnect there service. IF they give you any grief contact the FTC assuming you are in the US.
When you no longer get a dial tone plug a two way adapter into the wall and plug Vonage into it and a phone for your desk in the other.
You should be good. DR |

That may work, but if they physically disconnect at the far end of a long landline you can still have problems with your Vonage adapter. You can also never be sure that someone won't reconnect things at the other end. I would strongly recommend a physical disconnection inside the apartment.
On the subject of leaving that junction box- or whatever it is- alone, we're clearly in complete agreement! |
