Location: Kansas City, MO
ISP: TimeWarner RoadRunner Cable
Upload: 367kbps
Download: 2.55Mbps
Modem: Ambit U10C018 (provided by timewarner)
Router: Linksys WRT54G Ver2, 4.30.5 firmware
Phone Adapter: D-link VTA
Phone: Uniden EXAI7248 2.4GHz
Setup: Modem->Router->Adapter
Issue: With the setup listed above, we get a dial tone and are able to call out, but when someone calls us, we are unable to answer and the call dies. I've tried calling our Vonage phone with my cell phone and when I hit 'talk' on the Vonage phone to answer, my cell phone treats it as if I hung up. I can then call my cell phone from the Vonage phone, and it works perfectly. I've tried eliminating the router from the equation by changing the setup to Modem->Adapter, but then I get no dial tone at all on the phone. I tried cycling the power to all the devices in both setups and nothing changed. I also tried with the adapter using dynamic and static IPs, again with no change. I am planning to look for a cheap corded or 900MHz phone to test to see if that helps, but was wondering if there were any other options to try.

You've done the right things and I think you have the right solution. That 2.4 GHz cordless is interferring with your wireless router and causing you problems. Replacing it with a 900 MHz or 5.8 GHz unit is the right move.

you can try a number of different things.

1. I changed the channel on my wireless router to 11 and it seems to work fine with my 2.4 GHz phone.

2. The reason why when you remove the wireless router, the phone does not work is because the modem probably has the mac address of your wireless router in its system. you will need to turn off the modem for at least 5 minutes in order for it to re-learn a new mac address.

hope these ideas help.

I would think it would be a better idea to just remove the phone from the equation. I have two 2.4Ghz phone system (2 handsets each), and I've never had a problem with them interfering with the wireless, even on channel 6.

Well, I've purchased a Panasonic KX-TG5632M 5.8GHz phone, and the problem persists. I call from my cell phone, as soon as I answer on the Vonage phone, the cell phone essentially hangs up. Really quite annoying. Since it's a 5.8GHz phone, I can't see how it'd help anymore to try changing the wireless channel, but I suppose I can give it a try...

Edit: No difference...

Ouch! I must admit to being very surprised. Just to be sure, if you have or can borrow a simple corded phone to run a test, it would be worthwhile just to lay that issue to bed. Alternately, disable the wireless function on your router and see if anything changes.

I'm sorry to hear that your phone switch didn't solve the issue.

One thing that comes to mind is your router. Can you remove the router all together from your setup and try calling into your Vonage line. Let's see if removing the linksys router will give you free access both inbound and outbound from your Vonage adapter. If this solves the problem, then we can know with some certainty that your router needs to be better configured to enable your Vonage adapter to function at optimal levels.

I am suspecting that the router is somehow blocking the outbound audio from your adapter.

It's worth a try. btw, try it with your cordless phones so that we can see if the actual problem is with the router's config. This way, we don't have to wonder if it was actually the change from a wireless phone to a wired one.

I use a wireless phone with no issues at all.

hope this helps, mundy5

Ok, I tried that and amazingly enough, this time I did have a dial-tone. I tried calling out from the Vonage phone to my cell phone and it worked perfectly. However when I called from my cell phone to the Vonage phone, it put me directly to voicemail. The Vonage phone didn't even ring.

Of course when I set it up this way, I don't get internet anymore since the router isn't connected and the VTA doesn't have an internet-out port. I'm starting to wish I had gotten one of the other adapters.

okay, I can see now that you only have the phone adapter not a router. I am still puzzled why it's unable to communicate with the phone.

This is really making me wonder about 2 things.

1. Is there some kind of incompatibility with wireless phones?

or

2. How is your router configured? Have you forwarded all your ports? Is there some kind of firewall set up? Maybe it would be best to assign a static ip to the Vonage adapter and set it up as the DMZ that way nothing would hinder any incoming or outgoing signals.

let us know if this helps,

mundy5

The ports I've forwarded to the adapter, all UDP, are 53, 69, 123, 5060-5061, and 10000-20000. I've tried setting it as a DMZ as well with no effect. Are there any other router settings I should check for?
