PostPosted: Mon Jul 17, 2006 4:17 pm    Post subject: WRTP54G and No Dial tone. Reply with quote Back to top

I went to the highest tech support level and tried everything they could think of to get a dial tone but nothing worked. My phone is a 5.8 Uniden model that works fine when plugged into a regular house jack. Once it's plugged into a port on the router, I do not receive a dial tone or a message indicating that it may be in the wrong port. We've gone through many soft resets and power cycles without any positive results. Tech support shows that I have an active connection and can't understand why I'm not getting a dial tone. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

LOCATION: Pacific Grove, CA

ISP: Comcast (Scientific Antlantic DPC2100 Series Cable modem connects directly to wireless Vonage router WRTP54G)

ISSUE: No dial tone, Not able to send/receive calls (have tried using different phone to no avail)

Do the Phone lights illuminate on the Vonage adapter?

Try logging into the adapter's config screen at:
http://192.168.15.1/

username/password should be admin. Might be admin / password.

Once you're there, click on MAC address clone. Enable Mac Clone, then click clone. The router should power cycle itself and it should come online by itself.

My phone line 1 is blinking. Sometimes it's solid, other times it's blinking. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. I did as you said by enabling the clone and saved the settings but still no dice unfortunately. Thanks for trying to help, I appreciate it! Any other suggestions?

Is this a new install? If your device is registered, then you have an active SIP connection, and hense should have dial tone. It could be a bad router. You could also try setting it to factory defaults and trying again.

Have you tried plugging another phone into the Vonage adapter?

Are you using the same patch cord to plug the cordless phone into the regular line as you are using for Vonage (have you tried a different patch cable)?

(dumb question, but I gotta ask): By "A port in the router", you're sure it is plugged into PHONE 1, right? (sorry, you probably have that plugged into the correct port, but never hurts to check everything.)

Have you looked at the port on the Vonage adapter and checked for bent/cross wires within the plug? It happens sometimes.

Can you get to the Internet on a computer connected to the WRTP54G?

Yes, I have tried different patch cords as well as another phone. Also, I do have it plugged into the right port (Phone 1). Let's see what else...oh, I have not looked inside the actual phone port for bent wiring but I'll check. And yes I do have an Internet connection through the WRTP54G. The phone light is sometimes solid and sometimes blinking. It's a really challenging one. I want to say that it's just a faulty router but if Vonage sees that it's active and registered on their end then it's difficult to say that.

More suggestions are welcome please... Thanks!

Depending on the blink rate, a blinking phone light means either that you have phone mail or that you have a phone off the hook. Does unplugging everything from the phone ports give you a solid light? Are you plugging into house wiring? Have you checked for and deleted all phone mail?

Only phone in house that is connected is the one connected to the Vonage router. There are no messages and no phones offline. At this point, I'm thinking maybe I need to return the router and get a new one. If anyone has any further input and suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks to all of you who have contributed.

I just still have a hard time believing it's faulty hardware you know?

Just to be sure, does the blinking continue when you unplug everything from the phone jacks? Is the blinking a bit faster than 1 per second? If the answer for both is yes, then I'd say you have bad hardware. Before sending it back, though, I'd do a good visual inspection on the phone jacks. A simple short in the jack might be something you can fix.

I'd say that the blinking is approximately one per second, and even sometimes 1 per say 2 seconds. I will go inspect the wiring now to see if I can detect anything wrong.
