PostPosted: Sat Jul 15, 2006 11:05 pm    Post subject: Packet Loss Reply with quote Back to top

I just ran the Vonage speed test. I am running Comcast cable and here are the results:

Test1:
Download 5,593,816 bps
Upload 740,112 bps
QOS 98%
RTT 95 ms
MaxPause 45 ms

It said my Packet Loss was 63%.

Test 2:
Download 5,132,584 bps
Upload 738,520 bps
QOS 61%
RTT 98 ms
MaxPause 196 ms

It said my Packet Loss was again 63%.

I have never had a problem with my cable. Great speeds. Does anyone have this issue and how does it affect Vonage?

I am wanting to sign up for Vonage, but not if it is going to be poor quality due to my cable.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
VL

Horrible packet loss. It will seriously affect your Voip. it does have a detrimental effect on your regular Internet access, but the way TCP works, you may not actually notice it. TCP will resend lost packets, but Voip, being based on UDP, can't and won't. Imagining losing 60%+ of any sound stream should give you the basic idea.

I have a Motorola SB5120. I called Comcast, and of course they said that they cannot see ANY packet loss.

Any suggestions??

Thanks,

UPDATE:

I disconnected my router and went straight to my cable modem. Now I get zero packet loss.

Hook up the router and bam, 60% loss.

The router is a Linksys WRT54GX4. Any reccomendations?

Reebok,

Thanks for the replies. I do have the latest firmware. What I did not try and a tech at Linksys suggested, was to clone the Mac address of my computer. I thought I did that but apparently when I did the firmware update a few months back it reset it.

So i did it an viola, it works like a charm and the most PL I have had has been 2%. QOS has bounced around a little, but for the most part in the high 90's.

Thanks again and oh yeah, some of do search! I spent 2 hours reading before posting; Lol
