PostPosted: Fri Jul 14, 2006 5:24 pm    Post subject: Constantly Choppy Calls - Atlanta GA Reply with quote Back to top

I am a new member to the forums, and a consistently frustrated Vonage customer due to nearly constant choppy connections both ways. I went through Vonage's suggestions for solving this (i.e. bandwith saver), but no improvement in the choppiness, only a decrease in the sound quality when you can hear what the other person is saying! I ran the speed test, but for some reason it could not do the simulated Voip portion of the test. I have another question in another thread to address that issue. The rest of my information is as follows:

Atlanta GA
Comcast cable
Modem: Scientific Atlanta DPX2100
Vonage - Linksys WRTP54G
Modem --> Vonage --> PC
Download: 6.32 Mbps
Upload: 369 kbps

That's a weird one with the Voip test and 100% packets out of order. I hope the programmer responds to this in the other thread. Meanwhile, see if you can run a test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com . If you can, post the detailed results here. Then remove your Vonage adapter and plug your computer directly into your modem. Re-run the test and post those results as well. Also see if you can run the forum test with that setup.

Hmm. Your test results aren't exactly stellar, but they're good enough that you should be getting pretty good service. The difference between "with adapter" and "without adapter" looks like normal variation to me. Unless the quality of your internet service is varying a lot and you caught it at a good time, I don't see any explanation for your problems here, given that you're getting poor results in both directions. Maybe we'll get some insight in the other thread about your strange results with the forum Voip test.

Download: 2.99Mbps
Upload: 255 kbps
Upload Burst: 434 kbps
Quality of Service: 14%
Round Trip Time: 35 ms
Max Pause: 973 ms

With Vonage router inline and running. I re-ran the test several times, and frequently got a QoS around 97% with a Max Pause more like 50 ms, but there were other lousy readings as well. Apparently I'm all over the map on Max Pause. Round Trip time was consistent.

I'm no expert, but 14% doesn't exactly sound stellar!
