We have had a lot of problems using our Vonage with Shaw, here in Powell River BC. 70% of the time it will ring once and then cut out as we try to dial out.
Phoned Vonage and Shaw. Both blamed each other. Not quite sure where to go from here. Look for another internet provider perhaps. I would like more concrete evidence as to what the real problem is before making the jump. Anyone have any ideas how I should do this ?

There's enough evidence, in terms of shaw customer experiences, to stay well away from them. Google 'shaw Vonage' and you'll get a ton of info. Why Vonage works so well with other isp's and terribly with shaw indicates they are indeed doing something behind the scenes to degrade the service, and *not* being up front about it to boot. Some people would call that lying..

If my isp did that, they'd be gone in a second. No second chances. It's a good indicator of the type of company shaw is, so they wouldn't get a dime of my money.

I've been trouble free for awhile but some problems are starting to creep back.

You can get fairly good info by tracing packets and then doing a pingplot to those packtets. To trace you need how to to use a packet analyser or combination of Linksys WRT54g router+DD-WRT firmware+Rflow software. Once you have the IP addresses of where your calls are going to and coming from, you run pingplotter on them to get an idea of what sort of jitter, latency etc. you are getting between the two.

If you can't trace packets then try run pingplotter some IP's to someplace in NJ and Vancouver or wherever. If your in BC, your incoming calls come from Vancouver and your outgoing calls go to Vonage NJ.

Pingplotter standard is a free to download and use.

Today we are back to having same old problems after a few OK days. When we try to use the phone it rings once and we get the busy signal all the time. Internet browsing and email connection seems slow.
I did run a tracert command and captured the data but I can't paste into this message. Too bad. Not that I know much about reading this data but there are excessively high ms readings between numbers 2 and 3 hops which is a shawcable (server ?), I put it in brackets to excuse my ignorance about these matters but am just reporting what I see. Now I wonder what this means ?

When I signed up with Vonage in May I was originally on Telus. I had issues with Telus's customer service, so I dumped them and went to Shaw. Shaw suckered me into upgrading to their X-Treme service. Vonage NEVER ran right on Shaw. I was getting drop outs, echos, dropped calls etc. I've since returned to Telus and it's sold. Not a single problem now.

Bingo, shaw is messing with Vonage packets. Dump them for a provider who doesn't. Plain and simple. If there's no alternative to shaw in your area, then get a POTS line. Don't go with Shaw's 'digital voice' since I'm betting that's exactly what they want you to do.

@ webfors:

That's exactly what Shaw is doing, dropping packets. I wish I'd found this forum sooner.

When I re-connected with Shaw in May the suggest I spend 10 dollars more per month for their X-Treme service if you're a Vonage user (it's on their website). I downgraded to Highspeed and back to Xtreme and saw no difference in my problem. My folks have Shaw's digital phone in Alberta and Shaw lost power one afternoon and they had NO phone service for 5 hours!

Shaw's cable system runs off of the public power grid. If there is a power failure on their network (as has happend here on Vancouver Island), you'll lose internet service and cable completely.

Telus has power back up. So if you connect your Vonage Router and Modem to a UPS, you're internet will remain up and your Vonage will continue to work if you have a power failure.

I dont' recommend Shaw if you're a Vonage user. As I told the Customer Service rep on the phone, I'm willing to pay for "reliablity" over "speed". Shaw also wasn't the easiest to deal with when I cancelled my service.

With Telus, I have a 30 gib month transfer limited. Even with my Vonage I'm only using 1.2 GB per week.

I recently signed up for Vonages Voip service and while it performed well teh 1st day (after a series of test) recently (the last week) the quality of calls has been horrendous. WHile i can hear the person speaking just fine they have reported that my voice is choppy and / or sounds as if my voice is coming from a can / is robotic / as if im under water.

Luckily i decided to investigate and after calling Vonage and running a latency test was informed that the issue was with Shaw.

I called Shaw and ran a ping test and everything was fine on their end so...

Its either a router issue (and i will power cycle this afternoon) OR the reports from Winnipeg based Shaw / Vonage users are true: Shaw is screwing Voip (specifically Vonage users ?) over by deliberately giving our service less priority.

Does anyone have any further suggestions beyond what has been provided in this thread? Does power cycling help at all with Shaw lol?

No, nothing will help except for leaving shaw for an ethical provider.

However, you can always try, and spend hours upon hours, as other shaw users have done. Only to get more frustrated and have Shaw tell you everything is fine and that they are not doing anything to your packets (an obvious lie).

Or you can reward them for their evil and sign up for their Digital Voice product, which seems to work just fine on their network lol
