I want to add a wireless laptop to my current configuration. My current config is cable>cable modem>Rt31P2. I have a desktop off a RT31P2 ethernet port and a cable from the phone-out to my house jack for voice.

Any suggestions regarding the wireless router I should purchase and how I might configure it. Will IP addressing become an issue ?

You could get a wireless access point, but you would probably be happier with a better router than the RT31P2. The WRT54GL is a popular router because of its ability to run 3rd party firmware.

If you keep all computers connected to the WRT54GL you won't have any problems with IP addressing. Using both it will take some configuration, but should work.

Thanks for the reply. I gave Vonage a call to see if I could purchase the Linksys WRTP54G but they said I would have to purchase it 3rd party (best buy;circuit city; etc). and then activate it. They could not sell it to me and replace my RT31P2 without cause. So if understand things correctly I can get a new WRTP54G locally and connect it to my cable modem (in place of the RT31P2) and run my existing desktop off one of the ethernet ports and my phone from the phone port, and my new laptop off the wireless port ?

Is that correct ? The customer rep told me to log onto vonage.com to activate the new router. I guess I'm a little confused .... to log on I would still be using my old RT31P2. How do I activate the new router ? Is it just a manner of registering the device (serial #, etc) and then hooking it up ? Hope I'm making sense. Also will there be any IP addressing issues in my old desktop or my new laptop ? or is it all self learning ?

I was suggesting the WRT54GL, without the P and with the L. If you have to buy the router separately any way you mine as well save around 50% and get a better router, although you will have two devices (they'll stack though). All computers and the RT31P2 will be connected to the new router.

Couple of questions ...... (1) without the P (what does the p stand for) and with the L (linux....if i don't run linux what advantage is that for me) ...... (2)Is the main difference between the two the fact that that one is Vonage compatable and the other not. (3) Reading reviews on Amazon the unit you suggest is a far better device, but do I need advanced knowledge to set things up. Thanks

P = Phone

The WRT54GL is more powerful than the new WRT54Gs so it can handle heavier use better, and if you ever want to use Linux on it you will have the option.

The main difference is the WRTP54G has phone ports, the WRT54G does not. In addition to that though the WRT54G is more capable of heavy use.

You shouldn't need advanced knowledge. You may want to do these things, but no more.

Well I purchased the WRT54GL from Tiger ($59 after $10 rebate). I was going to go with the WRTP54G but they wanted $109 for it. I didn't quality for the $60 rebate as I am already a Vonage customer. Question ? Should I hook this thing up now before I purchase the laptop and get my Vonage and ethernet desktop running and add the laptop later, or configure it all once I have the laptop. I take it this router will go between the cable modem and my Rt31P2. I will move the desktop off the Rt31P2 and put it on a ethernet port of the WRT54GL ?

I'd set up when you got it, but it really doesn't matter. You've got the set up right.

be sure to use the new router for all traffic and to plug the rt31p2 into that router. thus using the Vonage router as a phone adapter only. i did this just a couple of days ago using the links that someone posted above. the rt31p2 is much more stable now and my calls are better.
