Witha wireless bridge, yeah I guess it would. BUT they are advertising 3-4 times better than dialup speeds. 3-4X would be 168-224K, which isn't very good, IMO. It may be free or cheap, but it's slow.

The service actually has multiple tiers, the free/low cost service that is intended not to compete with broadband and the competitively priced broadband service.

navydavy2001 is correct in questioning whether the free/low cost service will provide enough bandwidth to make phone calls at the highest quality setting. The question I have is how the service will limit bandwidth to free/low cost customers and if that traffic shaping will result in poor quality calls all by itself.

The ideal use of the system would be for WiFi phones. The big issue here is that the system mandates a login portal and that may pose problems.

The RFP was based on the project in Oakland, Michigan that was awarded to MichTel. They provide 128kbps in each direction, that qualifies under Vonage's definition of broadband. http://www.oakgov.com/wireless/faq/

Rumors abound that certain parts of the pilot program are in operation. It would be nice to get an actual test in that area from someone with a WiFi phone or a SoftPhone on a laptop.

I'd agree a test would be neat. To circumvent the login deal with a normal adapter, couldn't you use the ole hotel solution? Too bad the WIFI phone doesn't have a limited browser for that.

The non-Vonage versions have a web login capability that involves downloading scripts to provide access. I am unaware if this capability works or whether it is supported on the Vonage version.

The scripts would have to be provided by a third party (possibly the network operator) so that they can be tailored to the network in question.

WiFi coverage on most of these wireless services is VERY spotty at best. It *might* work, but I wouldn't bank on it.

So basically what you all are saying is it would be ok for an internet service but not stable enough to have Vonage running off it.

Well maybe in the future Vonage can figure something out so people using a wi fi internet connection can keep there Vonage Or vice versa the wi fi internet can come up with something to make Voip a possibility..........who knows

You would think there are other devices one could purchase to make there wi fi connection more stable - on a home based computer..

The problem isn't necessarily that it's a WiFi connection as much as the many variables. In this case, you won't be providing/controlling the WiFi access point nor its placement. When you're shooting a 2.4Ghz signal through the great outdoors, all sorts of other variables become factors, including weather.

I DO use WiFi inside with Vonage & Voip quite frequently. At my workplace (~250,000 sq ft building), I have installed many wireless access points and have excellent coverage throughout most of the building. If someone needs an extra phone where I don't already have an open cable, I'll hand them a wireless bridge and IP phone or analog adapter. I do the same with my Vonage adapter when I'm working the longer shifts. So, WiFi & Vonage CAN work, but once you start dealing with the great outdoors between you & the WiFi signal, it's more of a hit-or-miss deal.

I have had nothing but trouble with my Vontage service, the worst part is that the contract doesn't let you out regardless of if the service works or not.

I just paid the $39 bucks to cancel my service after 6 months of paying monthly fees for somthing that didn't work. I kept the service running so I wouldn't have to pay the recovery fee on the phone that didn't work. Why didn't I take advantage of the 30 day guarantee? Because even though I paid for expedited delivery, it took 3 weeks to get my phone and they count those 3 weeks against the guaranteed period!
