The first few days I had it set up I was getting terrible one way reception. As far as I could tell, the caller could hear me just fine, but the caller sounded very choppy to me. There are also intermittent bursts of loud static. Over the past few days, however, the service has been pretty decent.

I tended to use a lot of bandwidth before vonage... downloading and uploading music, movies and large graphics. I have cut down on the significantly over the past month, but I still like to download a new torrent every few days or so, and I try to leave those torrents open for seeding for as long as possible. If my upload speeds are already capped by my ISP, it doesn't sound like I have a whole lot of options other than "stop uploading while using Vonage".

Another problem I noticed the day after I first hooked the system up, my computers browsing speeds plummeted. I was getting dial-up transfer speeds while just doing basic web-browsing (no downloading or torrenting at that time).

What I would like to do is optimize my setup to get the best possible quality out of Vonage while maintaining the ability to browse, download and upload as I have become accustomed to. Do I need a newer/better modem, Vonage device or both? Is it a good idea to switch my OS over to Linux and use that exclusively? Would it be worth my time and effort to hardwire the Vonage directly into the house line or should I invest in some wireless phone adapters to get the other phones in the house to work on Vonage?

I understand that I am asking a lot of questions that cover a lot of ground. If you could advise me on these issues or point me in the direction of threads that cover these issues I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

If you want to optimize your internet connection so that Vonage will work better with heavier traffic, you will probably want to get a WRT54GL and load 3rd party firmware on it. NateHoy has excellent guides for both setting up the router with the Vonage device and configuring the QoS, at http://vonage.nmhoy.net/.

Vonage routers are generally known to be horrible, especially with P2P and other heavy use. Getting the WRT54GL will fix this too.

Your modem and Vonage device should be fine - a better router (like the WRT54GL) will help the most.

If you already have Windows and want Linux I would keep/install Windows on a separate partition, but have Linux be your main boot volume. There are boot managers such as GRUB that will let you select which OS to boot. This way if there is certain software that only runs on Windows you are not excluded from using it.

Its normally not very hard to use Vonage with your house's wiring. You can do both, it depends on personal preference - do you want cordless or corded phones? If you do get a cordless phone be sure that it is not 2.4Ghz.

Your bandwidth is a pretty tight fit for Voip, at least upstream. Adding anything on top of that is going to be dicey. I'd suggest more bandwidth if you insist upon being able to upload whilst using the phone.

The Voip test was run while I was uploading other files. I have set my global upload limit on my torrent client to 25 kbps, which hopefully will help.

As far as the wireless router goes, I already have a WRT54G (ver 2). Could I get rid of the ver 2 firmware and put the linux OS on it myself or am I stuck buying a new router?

Anyways, I haven't used the wireless router for ages since my most current machine didn't have a wireless NIC, but I'll throw my old wireless NIC into the machine if you really think that would help.

okay, I put my WRT54G (v2) router back at the top of the chain, flashed with a dd-wrt firmware (the Voip release).

I'm going to run a few tests to see what kind of speeds I can get.

I don't think the Voip version is what you want. You'll have better performance with the Standard version, and you could even go down to the Mini version.
