PostPosted: Tue Jul 11, 2006 11:59 am    Post subject: Charter and Vonage (SOCAL - Pasadena) Work Together Or Not? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I have had Vonage for about 2 months and it has proven un-usable with Charter in Socal-Pasadena. Charter does not offer the higher speed (5Mbs) cable in my area and I believe the 3Mbs-up/256K down is just not good enough.

Equipment includes:

Linksys RTP300 directly connected to Motorola SB5120 cable modem.

Charter works great if I don't attempt to use the Vonage or BroadVoice phones. Sometimes I am able to complete a call but far to often, the call drops and the modem resets. I use ping plotter to watch the line during calls. My initial configuration was SB5120 to WRT54G (Linksys SW adn DD-WRT firmware) to Linksys RTP300. The failures always seem to start on the Charter side.

Have spoken with both Charter and Vonage and still not able to consistently complete a telephone conversation.

Have you tried the forum Voip test? It might give us some insight into the problem. Also try a comparison test at www.testyourvoip.com . Use Boston as your test site.

I tested the line and I get great performance. The problem is when I make calls. The line can drop at any time. Of course, I don't mind tinkering but my wife is fed up.

The problem could be the RTP300 or it could be Charter. Whatever the case I need reliable phone service.

I am going to have to punt and get charter telephone. If I was not moving locations in the near future, I would change broadband to 6.0Mbs DSL and if necessary, swap out the RTP.

I have the exact same Charter service (upload & download) that you have and it works great with Vonage. I'm on the east coast.

I'm using the motorola TA. This is connected direclty to my charter modem. I'm plugging in my wirleess ap into the TA.

I have decided to purchase the Motorola VT1005V based upon your comment. I also noticed packet loss on the RTP300.

The alternative, getting new high-speed internet, is going to be very expensive considering I want to go month to month.

I just ordered charter telephone but I still prefer the features and savings realized through Voip. The charter phone will be installed quickly, is contract free and can be canceled easily allowing me time to work out the Voip issue.

I will let you all know how it goes.

Ok,

I did not purchase the Motorola because after further analysis I determined that the problem is not my hardware but Charter Broadband integrity.

I ran pingplotter for a few days and discovered that Charter will drop connectivity periodically regardless of the connected hardware configuration and there is nothing a subscriber can do. I contacted Charter and told them of my findings (some of the Charter nodes and qwest nodes, a backbone ISP, seem to have high packet loss) and they reluctantly confirmed the same frustration expressed by many customers.

Charter telephone was installed today and seems to work fine.

"Charter telephone was installed today and seems to work fine."

Now wait a minute -- their phones need clean service as well. They must be able to turn the line quality on and off. They keep it off for other vendors, and turn it on for their phone customers?

That's not actually legal.

Well, it's not illegal. That's the whole debate in Congress over "Net Neutrality". Congress has tried several times, but can't seem to pass a bill to outlaw this sort of thing. The Telecom/Cable lobby is spending vast sums of money to defeat these bills. They claim it is a solution looking for a problem.

Hello Again,

I don't know what happened but my Vonage and BroadVoice services have been operating flawlessly over Charter during the month of August. I did purchase Charter Telephone but I kept the other services because of the low cost features.

Yesterday, I upgraded to charter 5Mbs. I did not need to go to 10Mbs. The service It is not advertised on their web site but I made a call and it was upgraded immediately.
