PostPosted: Mon Jul 10, 2006 10:17 am    Post subject: Adding Wireless Router to Existing Network Reply with quote Back to top

Hey, all...

Very basic question here. I think I know the answer, but I want to double-check before I spend some money.

I'm a current Vonage customer. I have the Linksys RTP300 (I think - not at home, working from pictures on the Vonage site). I've got a new laptop and want to go wireless. I think I'm going to buy the Linksys WRT54G wireless router, which the Vonage site says is supported.

Am I correct in thinking that I should just leave everything as is and plug the WRT54G into the RTP300? So it goes:

Cable Modem --> RTP300 --> WRT54G

Is that right? Anything I'll need to set anywhere that isn't obvious?

Thanks in advance!

Although that would work.. it might cause some issues you aren't anticipating because you would be introducing a 2nd router in the mix (particularly with port forwarding... if you use it). I personally would recommend you use the wireless router as a switch and let the RTP300 be the router and DHCP server. Unless you want a specific separation of machines on your local network, there isn't much of a reason to want two routers.

My setup is as follows:
Static IP of RT31 = 192.168.1.1
Static IP of WRT54G = 192.168.1.2
Enable DHCP on RT31
Disable DHCP on WRT54G
Set WRT54G to be gateway (not router)

As for wiring, plug a network cable from a numbered port on RT300 to a numbered port on WRT54G (this is what makes it work like a switch).

As an FYI, I made sure both devices were on the same subnet (192.168.1) so that I can administor both from my computer. The RT31 was set to an IP of 192.168.15 from Vonage. Not sure if that is the case with yours.

Good luck

Okay, that makes sense. I wouldn't have known about the switch thing. That arrangement would still let two wireless computers access the internet simultaneously?

Using that same arrangement, could I also give the WRT54G the static IP of 192.168.15.2 (for example)? The key is that they're both on the same subnet, right?

My RTP300 was set to 192.168.15.1, so I'm not entirely sure how to change it. Do I just type in something new on the basic setup page and hit "save settings?"

The answers are: yes, yes, and yes.

To change the IP of the router... simply enter in new values on the main setup page ("local IP address")

To change the WRT54G to a gateway, go to the advanced routing section of the setup tab. Select gateway in the dropdown.

Good luck,
