I have been using Vonage for 6 months. Last week, all of the phones went dead. I hear a "click" when I pick up the phone, but no dial tone. I had a regular phone line plugged into the router on PHONE 1 port directly to an open wall jack in my office. Up until last week, all phones in the house then received a dial tone. Now, only if I plug one of my 4 phones directly into the adapter (Linksys WRTP54G) then I hear a dialtone. The RJ 11 is unplugged on the NIU. I have tried unplugging the power on the modem router etc, reboot everything - and I still get the click. Bottom line, I can only have one phone working ion the house (whichever one I plug into the router) Hardwiring in the house is not working. My wife is going to kill me. WHAT CAN I DO?

Does the phone light on the adapter start flashing when you plug it into a wall jack? If so, it indicates a short in the wiring or an off-hook condition on one of the phones. Start by unplugging all of the phones in the house and seeing if that stops the light from flashing.

Steve - I unplugged all the phones in the house - one-by one. The light did not stop blinking until all the phones were unplugged (including the line that goes into the router) This is frustrating because everythiong was working fine. . I have tried the following in addition to the steps you mentioned:

1. Getting a new phone cord - no difference
2. Pluggin the rounter into TWO other (different) jacks - no difference
3. Rebooting the cable modem and router - no difference
4. Flashing light on PHONE 1 port - and there is no voice mail!
5. If I plug any of the phones DIRECTLY into the router - IT WORKS!
6. But none of the other jacks detect a dialtone- so hardwiring isn't working
7. Double checked the NIU to make sure the RJ11 was unplugged

If the blinking didn't stop after all the phones were unplugged from the wall jacks and you had to unplug the adapter from the wall plug to get it to stop, then it indicates that you have a short in your house wiring. (A short in the cord connecting the adapter to the wall jack would explain it as well, but you tried a new cord.)

Shorts that appear after a long time do happen. It happened to me, in fact, after 10 years in a house. It turned out to be a phone line in the wall pulled tight around the metal box. It eventually wore through as the house settled over the years. More likely, though, is a short in the wiring to one of the jacks. You did disconnect your house wiring from the old land line, right? Double check that. Then open the wall jacks one at a time and give each a careful visual inspection. Look for a stray bit of wire bridging two contacts. Look for two wires that are stripped back a little too far and are touching together. Even look for heavy dust.
